WORKSHOP REPORT

MT. Kenya Region RPL Practitioners Training – Level 2


Held at Nyeri National Polytechnic, 28th April to 2nd May 2025
1.0 PREAMBLE
The State Department for TVET, through the Directorate of the RPL Delivery Unit,
organized a workshop to train Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) practitioners cohort 2 at the
Nyeri National Polytechnic from 28th April to 2nd May 2025. The primary objective of the
training was to build the capacity of trainers to effectively conduct RPL assessments across
various trade areas.

2.0 OBJECTIVES

By the end of the training, participants were expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of RPL

2. Create awareness and manage publicity

3. Conduct counselling and facilitation

4. Plan for RPL assessments

5. Conduct assessments

6. Carry out monitoring and evaluation

7. Ensure quality assurance in the RPL assessment process

8. Provide post-assessment support services

9. Use the RPL Management Information System (MIS)

10. Complete and present a project

3.0 METHODOLOGY

The training involved a combination of presentations and practical demonstrations led by


facilitators. Participants engaged in group work to practice tasks such as:

 Awareness creation

 Counselling

 Development of assessment tools and plans

 Conducting assessment

Each group, organized according to area of specialization, presented their work to the larger
group. Constructive feedback was provided by both facilitators and fellow participants. Groups
then revised and submitted their amended work. Each group was guided by a designated
facilitator throughout the training.

4.0 PARTICIPANTS

A total of 267 practitioners from 37 TVET institutions among them Nyeri National
Polytechnic, Meru National Polytechnic, Kiambu National Polytechnic, Mathenge
Technical Training Institute, and the Jua Kali Federation were trained across various trade
areas.

5.0 FEEDBACK FROM STAKEHOLDERS

Stakeholders provided the following feedback:

a) Review and possibly reduce assessment fees

b) Enhance awareness campaigns on RPL

c) Track implementation and identify areas for improvement

d) Build capacity of TVET administrators on the RPL process

6.0 CONCLUSION

Participants are required to complete their projects, case studies, and submit e-portfolios. The
training was well-received, with participants acknowledging its importance in strengthening RPL
implementation in their institutions.

7.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

 Allocate more facilitators to allow for comprehensive feedback and discussion for
participants who are more than 150

 Some participants lacked access to laptops, limiting their ability to complete certain tasks.
It is recommended that individual assignments be assigned as take-home tasks in future
trainings
