INTRODUCTION
What exactly is urbanization?
Urbanization is the increase in population of cities in proportion to region's rural population
or simply put as population shift from rural to urban areas.
Then, what about environmental pollution?
🡪 Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause adverse
change.
So, how does urbanization lead to environmental pollution?
AIR POLLUTION WATER POLLUTION
🡪 Due to urbanization, the amount of air pollutants Water bodies: lake, river, ocean, groundwater
released to the environment is increasing by the day
to meet the demands of an ever-growing population in Sources: agricultural runoff, improper waste
urban areas. [[Link]] management, industrial & municipal sewage
sludge. [[Link]]
🡪 Sources: smoke from power plants, heavy
industries, fuelled vehicles Examples of pollutant: fertilizer,
disease-carrying pathogen, heavy metal,
🡪 Examples of pollutant: carbon dioxide, sulphur sediment, petroleum, microplastic
oxide, nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, CFC
Consequent events: eutrophication 🡪 algal
🡪 Consequent events: greenhouse effect 🡪 global bloom 🡪 biodiversity loss; spread of diseases
warming 🡪 polar ice melts 🡪 habitat loss & sea level (salmonellosis, cholera), bioaccumulation &
rise; acid rain, ozone depletion biomagnification of heavy metal & plastic in
aquatic animals. [[Link]]
🡪 Health effects (human): cardiovascular diseases,
skin cancer, cataract. [[Link]]
NOISE POLLUTION
SOIL POLLUTION Sound/noise above 85 decibels (dB) is harmful,
depending on how long and often you are
Sources: industrial & sanitary wastewater, poor exposed to them. [WebMD]
landfill management, mining site, acid rain,
excessive agricultural activities, building Sources: heavy traffic, aircrafts, trains,
construction. [DOI: 10.1007/978-3-540-70777-6_7] construction sites, quarries, sonar (marine
mammals)
Examples of pollutant: lead, cadmium, arsenic,
methane, DDT Consequent events: hypertension 🡪 high blood
pressure; sleep disturbance 🡪 insomnia; tinnitus
Consequent events: soil acidification 🡪 poor 🡪 hearing loss; marine mammals (whales,
vegetation; soil erosion 🡪 landslide; soil structure dolphins, porpoises) use sound to communicate
alteration 🡪 building collapses; congenital disorder underwater 🡪 sonar alters behavioral patterns
in human caused by vaporized pollutants. like navigation, detecting prey & breeding.
