Question 1:
Read the scenario below and answer some questions on effective supervision and the control of germs using
what you learned in the session.
Laurie works at a facility-based child care program and is taking courses to become certified as a Level 1 Early
Childhood Educator. Last Tuesday was a busy day for Laurie.
She was taking care of three toddlers when one of them announced that she had to “go potty”. The other two
suddenly decided that they had to do the same. Laurie looked around to let her room partner know that she
is taking the three toddlers to the classroom bathroom, but her room partner was engaged playing with other
children. “How hard can it be?” thought Laurie as she led the three children to the bathroom.
Two of the children had soiled their diapers. Before changing them, Laurie washed her hands. She proceeded to
change each child’s diaper. While Laurie was removing the diaper of the second child, the third child said, “I really
have to go potty” and wet his pants. Laurie disposed of the diapers, then rinsed off the little boy’s pants.
When the children were done, Laurie quickly got them dressed and sent them back to the snack area so that she
could clean up. She wiped her hands on her smock and then followed the children to the snack area where she
prepared crackers, cheese and fruit.

a. Certification
Laurie isn't fully certified just yet, since she's still taking classes to be an early
childhood educator. Because she doesn't have much experience, she might miss risks
and not be as careful about hygiene.
Even teachers who are certified need to keep learning to stay up-to-date with the best
ways to do things and the rules. This shows why it's so important to keep learning in
this job.

b. Supervision
Laurie's roommate was busy with other kids, so Laurie was stuck watching three
toddlers by herself in the bathroom. That's not safe because there weren't enough
adults for the number of kids. It's important to have enough eyes on the kids to keep
them safe and sound.
Plus, Laurie was trying to change diapers and help another kid use the toilet all at the
same time. She couldn't keep a close eye on everyone, and that could have led to
accidents or her missing something important.
c. Communication
Laurie didn't tell her roommate what was up, so her roommate didn't know help was
needed. This could have slowed things down when the kids needed help, and that
could've been dangerous.
It's super important for people who take care of kids to talk clearly to each other so the
kids stay safe and sound. If everyone's on the same page, they can share the load and
jump in fast if something goes wrong.
d. Health and safety hippopo
Okay, so there are a few safety issues here:
Laurie washed up before changing diapers, but not after. Big mistake – germs spread that way!.
She rinsed the dirty pants, which is good, but we don't know if she used anything to kill germs or washed
her hands after.
Wiping hands on the smock? Yuck! That spreads germs around.
Then, she made food without washing her hands after cleaning up the mess. That's a huge problem and a
quick way to spread diseases.
Basically, this shows why childcare places need to have good training, someone watching over things,
good communication, and everyone following the health and safety rules.
