BBA I – Practice Questions – PROBABILITY
Q1 A firm engaged in manufacture of manufacture of steel pipes has three plants with a daily production of 1000,
1500 and 2500 units. According to past experience, it is known that the fraction of defective pipes produced by the
three plants are respectively are 0.04, 0.09 and 0.07. A pipe is selected from a day’s production at random and found
to be defective.
a) What is the probability that the pipe came from the second plant?
b) Which plant is producing the maximum defectives?
Q2 Three salesmen A, B and C have been given a target of selling 10,000 units of the same product. The probabilities
of them achieving their targets are 0.25, 0.30 and 0.50 respectively. If they try to sell the product independently, find
the probability of success of only one salesman and failure of the other two.
Q3 A bag contains 8 red and 5 white balls. Two successive draws of three balls each are made without replacement.
Find the probability that the first drawing will give 3 white balls and the second 3 red balls.
Q4 A problem is given to five students A, B, C, D and E. Their respective chances of solving it are ½, ⅓, ¼, ¼, and ⅕.
What is the probability that at least one of the students solves the problem?
Q5 Two friends appear for an interview for the same post. The probability of their selection are 1/7 and 1/5. What is
the probability that
a) Both friends will be selected.
b) Only one will be selected, and
c) None of them will be selected.
Q6 A consignment of 20 picture tubes contains 5 defectives. Two tubes are selected one after the other at random.
Find the probability that both are defective assuming
(a) The first tube is replaced in the consignment before the second is drawn.
(b) The first tube is not replaced.
Q7 Assume that there are three boxes which contain red and black balls as follows:
Box 1 - 3 Red and 7 Black
Box 2 - 6 Red and 4 Black
Box 3 - 8 Red and 2 Black
A ball is drawn at random from Box 1; if it is Red, 2nd ball is drawn from Box 2. If the first ball drawn from Box1 is
black, the 2nd ball is drawn from box 3.
i) What is the probability that the two balls are red?
ii) What is the probability that one ball is red and the other black?
Q8 A bag contains 18 balls marked from 1 to 18. One ball is drawn at random. What is the probability that it is
marked with a multiple of 4 or 6?
Q9 Suppose 8 defective light bulbs have got mixed up with 12 good ones. If two bulbs are chosen at random, what is
the probability that they are
(a) Both good? (b) Both bad? (c) One good and one bad?
Q10 Among the sales staff engaged at a company, 60% are females. In terms of their professional qualification, 70%
of females and 50% of males possess a diploma in sales. Find the probabilities that a salesperson selected at random
will be
(a) A male or (b) A female – given that the person has a diploma in sales.
Q11 The probability that India wins a test match against England is 1/3. If India and England play 6 test matches,
what is the probability that
a) India will win at least one match? b) India will lose all the six matches?
Q12 A bag contains 10 gold and 8 silver coins. Two successive draws of 3 coins each are made such that (i) the coins
are replaced before the second drawing (ii) the coins are not replaced before the second drawing. In each case find
the probability that the first drawing will give 3 gold and the second 3 silver coins.
