Assignment

The assignment for Advanced Design of RCC Structures includes various design tasks such as a cantilever retaining wall, a bunker for coal storage, an elevated water tank, a solid slab bridge, and a prestressed concrete beam. Each task specifies parameters like dimensions, materials (M20, M25, M30 concrete, Fe-415 steel), and loading conditions. Additionally, students are required to create detailed drawing sheets of their designs using specified dimensions for submission.

ASSIGNMENT
Sub. Name: Advanced Design of RCC Structures Sub. Code: CE712 Semester: VII

1. Design a cantilever retaining wall to retain an earth embankment with a horizontal top 3.5 m
above ground level. Density of earth = 18 kN/m3. Angle of internal friction =30°. SBC of soil
is 200 kN/m2. Take coefficient of friction between soil and concrete = 0.5. Adopt M20 grade
concrete and Fe-415 steel.
OR
Design a Stem of counterfort retaining wall if the height of wall above the ground level is 5.5
m, SBC of soil = 180 kN/m2, angle of friction = 30° and unit weight of back fill= 18 kN/m3.
Keep spacing of counterforts as 3 m. Coefficient of friction between soil and concrete μ=0.5.
Adopt M20 grade concrete mix and Fe-415 steel. Also check for Shear.

2. Design side walls and hopper bottom of a rectangular bunker of capacity 300 kN to store coal
using M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel. Given: Unit weight of coal is 8 kN/m3. Angle of repose
of coal = 25°.
OR
Design the side wall of silo to store coal. Diameter of silo is 6m, height of cylindrical wall is
16 m, unit weight of coal 8.5kN/m3, μ = 0.22 and coefficient of friction is 0.4. Sketch the
details.

3. Design a flat bottom circular elevated water tank of diameter 10 m and total height 4 m which
is to be supported by ring beam of 7.5 m diameter. The ring beam is to be supported by six
columns equally placed. Use M25 concrete and Fe-415 steel. Design the following components
of water tank
(a) Top dome
(b) Top ring beam
(c) Cylindrical wall
OR
Design a rectangular tank resting on the ground for a capacity 100kilolitres. Use M25
concrete and Fe 415 rebars.
OR

Design top dome, top ring beam and cylindrical wall of an intze tank of capacity 1000 kL litres.
Use M30 grade of concrete and steel of grade Fe 415.

4. Design a solid slab bridge for class AA loading fo data:

Clear span = 8.0m
Clear width of road ways = 7.5m
Average thickness of wearing coat = 80mm
OR
Design a slab bridge with carriage way of 12m with Kerbs only for an effective span of 6.0m
for IRC 70 loading. Concrete used is M25 and HYSD bar of grade Fe415 are used.

5. A pretensioned prestress concrete beam of 7m span has cross section of 300 mm × 500 mm, is
prestressed with 155 kN force at transfer. The cable has cross sectional area of 1500 mm2 of
steel and has a parabolic profile with a maximum eccentricity of 1500 mm at the mid span.
Determine the loss of prestress, given that: Es = 2.1 × 105 N/mm2 and Ec = 3 x 104 N/mm2.
OR
A pretensioned prestressed concrete beam of cross section 250mm x 400mm and span 8m is
applied with an initial prestressing force of 800 kN at an eccentricity of 80 mm by tendons of
800 mm2. Estimate the percentage loss in prestress. Take E 35000N/mm2, E, 200kN/mm2
and creep coefficient for concrete = 1.6.

Note: Practical File

1. Make Reinforced detailed drawing sheets of the design problems given
above.
2. Use A1: 594 mm x 841 mm drawing Sheet.
3. Submit practical file only in a drawing folder.
