Alpha Abebe wrote an article on February 11, 2024, about how diverse the Black
Canadian community is and how this diversity needs to be noticed and emphasized
in society, politics, and education. Abebe (2024) says that the idea of being Black in
Canada is often seen as a single thing, but that Black Canadians have a lot of
different experiences, cultures, and memories that are often forgotten. Abebe
(2024) shows how complicated Black Canadian identity is by looking at changes in
population, past groups, and personal stories like that of Abel Tesfaye (The
Weeknd). The article then argues about the accomplishments of different Black
groups in Canada, including those started by people who were slaves in the global
trade and those made up of newcomers from Africa and the Caribbean. Finally,
Abebe (2024) says that recognizing and knowing this variety is important for
making policies that are open to everyone and for building a fuller understanding of
what it means to be Black in Canada.

Questions about your chosen source

Guiding questions for this section can be found on the “Task: Choose & Analyze a Source”
page of our Week#6 Content. I’m expecting a paragraph of about 150 words for each.

3. Strengths/Merits
What makes the article logical, fair, important and truthful? Identify the most significant
claims, evidence and writing techniques in your main source. Do some quick research to see
if you can verify the evidence in the article. Then discuss the validity and why this article
matters. Cite all references to sources, please.

The article by Abebe (2024) makes sense, is fair, and is important because it shows
the variety of identities in Black Canada using solid proof and expert views.
Including demographic data and historical circumstances gives a fair look at the
variety of Black Canadians, making a strong case for policies and conversations that
are more open and recognize everyone.

4. Questions/Alternatives/Weaknesses
Please ask some QUESTIONS to show that you’re engaging with your source. Consider the
author’s perspective and who they are speaking for, and who they’re speaking to, including
minoritized groups (women, LGBTQ people, Black, Indigenous People of Colour (BIPOC),
people with disabilities, poor people, etc.) Reflect on whether the article is persuasive and
what might be missing. Even if the article is basically strong, why might some reasonable
people disagree with the author? Cite all references to your source, please.

There are questions about Abebe's (2024) coverage of all Black Canadian situations,
such as those with varying levels of income, gender, and sexual orientation. The
article might not stress enough the need to work together to fight institutional
racism while focusing on diversity. The chance of community division or weaker
group action shows areas that need more research and conversation on how to
balance differences and shared experiences.

Week#7

5.Uphold Academic Integrity

Use YOUR OWN ideas to answer these questions, please.

1. Explain 2 problems that can result from students using ChatGPT and other AI tools to
write your essays. (100 words)

Concerning writing essays using ChatGPT and other AI tools, there are two major issues that
can happen. First, it can make it harder to learn how to think critically and write well. When
students use AI to write their essays, they miss the chance to practice making cases,
organizing stories in a way that makes sense, and sharing their own unique points of view.
Second, it makes them worry about academic ethics from an ethical point of view. Putting in
AI-generated content as your own work goes against honesty and creativity rules, and could
get students in trouble if caught.

2. Kelly McCovey (2023) explains, “ChatGPT’s goal is not to deliver a true or high quality
result. Its goal is to deliver something that sounds like a true or high quality result.”
Please summarize this quote and respond to it. (100 words)

Kelly McCovey (2023) suggests that ChatGPT's goal is not to make sure the
information it gives is correct or of high quality, but to make answers that look
trustworthy and good. This view shows a major flaw in AI models like ChatGPT: they
focus on creating convincing text instead of checking to see if it is true or of high
quality. Therefore, it is important for people to carefully consider the data that AI
gives them, knowing that while it can give them useful information, its abilities are
limited by the data it was taught on and the fact that it is designed to give answers
that sound like a person, not check facts.

6.Locate Sources
Guidelines and examples for this section can be found in our Week 7 Content. Please attend
the Research WorkShop, hosted by the Centennial Library, to learn more about doing
research.

1. Brainstorm a list of keyword search terms (5-10 phrases or strings)

 Alpha Abebe

4
COMM171 Research Essay Process Assignment #2

 Black Canada
 Diversity
 Effective Policies
 Recognition

2. List sources that you think might be relevant to your project

and briefly explain the relevance of each source, in ONE sentence.

Newspapers/Magazines

○ Source 1: Black Canadians see workplace as “epicentres” of

racism, survey finds. CTVNews.
https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/black-canadians-see-workplace-
as-epicentres-of-racism-survey-finds-1.6442976

○ Relevance: Relevant because it argues about workplace racism

faced by Black community.

○ Source 2: . Black Canadian National Survey – Interim Report 2021. Canadian

Race Relations Foundation. https://crrf-fcrr.ca/research-reports/black-canadian-

○ Relevance: Relevant since it argues about some statistical facts
to support the primary article’s arguments.

Library/Database Sources

Source 1: Beyond multiculturalism: revisioning a model of pandemic anti-racism

education in post-Covid-19 Canada. International Journal of Anthropology and

Ethnology.

Week#8

7.Annotated Bibliography
Choose the 3 best sources from your research above and provide a complete APA Reference
and a 1 paragraph Annotation for each. The annotation paragraph should summarize the
source in 2-3 sentences and then discuss how the source is relevant to your project. How
will you use it to help you analyze your main source? Which WRITING TECHNIQUES
will that source help you analyze? Please refer to the authors and cite all ideas from
sources. Guidelines and examples for this section can be found in our Week#8 Content.

Source#1:
APA Reference: Flaviis, S. D. (2023, June 15). Black Canadians see workplace as

“epicentres” of racism, survey finds. CTVNews. https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/black-

canadians-see-workplace-as-epicentres-of-racism-survey-finds-1.6442976

Annotation: The article by Flaviis (2023) argues about a survey that shows
Black Canadians experience a lot of racism at work and when they deal with
the police. The study of Alpha Abebe's (2024) work will be strengthened by
this source, which gives specific facts and personal accounts of the racism
Black Canadians face in the work environment. It will help us look at how
Abebe (2024) used statistics and personal stories to show how widespread
racism is and how important it is for Black Canadian communities to
recognize and deal with it.

Source#2:

6
COMM171 Research Essay Process Assignment #2

Annotation: The article gives important information about how racism affects
Black Canadians in many areas. This article will help the study of Alpha
Abebe's article by giving strong factual proof on structural racism. This
directly supports Abebe's (2024) call for recognizing and addressing the
different experiences of Black Canadians.

Source#3:
APA Reference: Lei, L., & Guo, S. (2022). Beyond multiculturalism: revisioning a model of

pandemic anti-racism education in post-Covid-19 Canada. International Journal of

Anthropology and Ethnology, 6(1). https://doi.org/10.1186/s41257-021-00060-7

Annotation: In their study from 2022, Lei and Guo look at a new anti-racist
education plan for Canada after COVID-19. They want to do this to deal with
the rise in racism and xenophobia. Their work suggests changes that should
be made to schools so that people can take a stronger stand against racism.
This is related to Alpha Abebe's research on Black Canadian diversity and
societal problems. This source will be used to argue against Abebe's
(2024) ideas for changing Canadian society and policy, especially in the area
of education, to make it a more welcoming and non-racist place to live.
