1371 Practice Exam 2A

This document is a practice midterm exam for Math 1371 Calculus I, designed to help students prepare for the actual exam by simulating exam conditions. It includes various types of problems such as finding critical values, evaluating limits, and sketching graphs, along with specific instructions for answering. The exam emphasizes providing exact answers and covers a range of calculus topics, though it notes that not all material will be included in this practice version.

Math 1371 Calculus I Practice Midterm 2A

This practice exam is a bit shorter than the actual exam. When working on it, start with 40-50 minutes without books or
notes. This will mimic an actual exam & let you know what material you need to focus on. But also know that 8 problems
cannot cover all of the material, so there are topics that are not covered by this practice exam.

When possible give exact answers, not decimal approximations. For example, if the answer to a problem is 2, leave the
answer in that form rather than 1.414; if the answer is 61 , leave the answer in that form rather than 0.166667.

1. If f 0 (x) = |x − 2|, which of the following might be a graph of y = f (x).

(a) (b) (c) (d) (e)

y y y y y

2. Consider the function f (x) = x3 − 6x2 + kx − 4. Determine the value(s) of k that make(s) x = 2 a critical value of
f (x) and classify the critical value as giving a local minimum, a local maximum or neither. Circle any appropriate
responses.
(a) k = 10 makes x = 2 a critical value of f (x) and there is a local maximum at x = 2.
(b) k = 10 makes x = 2 a critical value of f (x) and there is a local mininum at x = 2.
(c) k = 10 makes x = 2 a critical value of f (x) and there is no local extrema at x = 2.
(d) k = 12 makes x = 2 a critical value of f (x) and there is a local maximum at x = 2.
(e) k = 12 makes x = 2 a critical value of f (x) and there is a local mininum at x = 2.
(f) k = 12 makes x = 2 a critical value of f (x) and there is no local extrema at x = 2.
(g) No value of k makes x = 2 a critical value of f (x).
3. A trough is 12 feet long and any cross section has the shape of an isosceles triangle that is 20 feet wide at the top and
24 feet deep. If the trough is filled with water at a rate of 150 cubic feet per minute, how fast is the water level rising
when the water is 16 feet deep?
4. Given f (x) − x5/3 − 20x2/3 .
(a) Find all critical values of f (x).
(b) Use the first derivative test on each critical value to determine whether there is a local minimum, a local maximum,
or neither at the critical value.
5. Sketch the graph of a function f (x) which is continuous and has all of the following properties.
• f 0 (0) = 0, f 0 (3) DNE, and f 0 (6) DNE
• f 0 (x) > 0 for x < 0 and for 3 < x < 6. f (x) < 0 for 0 < x < 3 and for 6 < x.
• f 00 (x) > 0 for x < −2 and for 6 < x. f 00 (x) < 0 for −2 < x < 3 and for 3 < x < 6.
6. Find all local maximums, local minimums, and points of inflections on g(x) = cos2 (x) − 2 sin(x) on the interval
0 ≤ x ≤ 2π.
7. Evaluate the following limits.

cos(x) + cos(2x) 4x2 + 1 (c) lim+ (sin(x))x
(a) lim (b) lim x→0
x→π (x − π)2 x→−∞ 3x − 1

8. Given that 163/4 = 8, use an appropriate linear approximation to approximate 15.93/4 .
