1. BACKGROUND
Patient safety has become a global health concern and a key component of quality care.
According to the World Health Organization, one in ten patients worldwide experiences harm
during healthcare delivery, with the highest incidence occurring in low- and middle-income
countries. In Indonesia, the integration of patient safety into nursing education remains
limited and inconsistent across institutions.

The I-NERSAFE Project (Improving Nursing Education in Indonesia through Patient

Safety) aims to improve the quality of nursing education by embedding patient safety
competencies within undergraduate and postgraduate curricula, enhancing institutional
capacity, and fostering collaborative research between Indonesia, Malaysia, and Europe.

This project aligns with the objectives of Erasmus+ CBHE Strand 2, focusing on system-
level impact, innovation, and international collaboration in higher education.

2. PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The overall goal of the project is to strengthen nursing education systems in Indonesia
through curriculum modernization, faculty development, and patient safety research,
guided by international standards and evidence-based practices.

Specific Objectives

1. Modernize nursing curricula based on WHO and EU patient safety frameworks.

2. Enhance the capacity of nursing educators in patient safety, simulation-based

teaching, and interprofessional collaboration.

3. Strengthen research culture and collaboration among universities in Indonesia,

Malaysia, and Europe.

4. Develop digital and simulation-based tools for effective patient safety education.
5. Build a sustainable academic and professional network on patient safety in
Southeast Asia.
