ANNEXURE “A”
CLIMATE CHANGE
We’ve all heard of it, but what is climate change and what is it doing to our planet?
So, what is climate change?
Climate change, or global warming, is the process of our planet heating up. Since the Industrial
Revolution, human activity has caused the Earth to warm by approximately 1°C. This rise in
temperature leads to more extreme and unpredictable weather. Droughts are becoming hotter
and last longer. Some areas will get wetter, and many animals and humans may struggle to adapt.
Causes of Climate Change:
1. Burning Fossil Fuels: Industrialized countries have been burning
large amounts of fossil fuels like oil and gas, releasing gases that
trap heat in the atmosphere, known as the “Greenhouse Effect.”
2. Farming: Cows release methane, a greenhouse gas, through their
digestive processes. With nearly 1.5 billion cows worldwide, this adds
up significantly.
3. Deforestation: Forests absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.
The Amazon rainforest acts like the lungs of our planet. One-fifth of the rainforest has
been lost over the past 50 years, due to trees being cut down for wood, palm oil, and
farmland.

GR 6 ENGLISH – TERM 1 TEST – FEBRUARY 2025
Effects on the Planet and Weather:
A warmer climate could lead to more rainfall, changing
seasons, shrinking sea ice, and rising sea levels. The increased
frequency, duration, and intensity of extreme weather
phenomena, such as hurricanes, floods, droughts, heatwaves,
and tornadoes, pose significant risks to human communities
and infrastructure.
Effects on Wildlife:
Climate change affects wildlife globally, with polar animals at particular risk. The Arctic Sea ice
is melting at a rate of 9% per decade, threatening species like polar
bears and seals. Sea turtles’ nesting beaches are also at risk.
How to Help:
Small changes at home can make a difference, like using energy-saving lightbulbs, walking instead
of driving, turning off unused electrical items, recycling, and reducing food waste.
