Exercise 1

The document covers harmonic motion and its equations, including initial conditions and their corresponding equations of motion. It also discusses the analysis of periodic functions, including amplitude, phase angle, displacement, velocity, and acceleration at a specific time. Additionally, it includes harmonic analysis (Fourier analysis) of periodic functions.

1. Introduction

1.1. A harmonic motion has a circular frequency 2.5 rad/s. For each of the following
initial conditions, write down the equation of motion and plot it over one cycle.
a) x (0) = 4 mm, x (0) = 0.
b) x (0) = - 4 mm, x (0) = 0.
c) x (0) = 0, x (0) = 15 mm/s.
d) x (0) = 0, x (0) = - 15 mm/s.
e) x (0) = 4 2 mm, x (0) = 10 2 mm/s.
f) x (0) = 4 2 mm, x (0) = - 10 2 mm/s.

1.2. A harmonic motion is described by the equation:

x = 15 sin (3t + 3/4) - 20 cos (3t - /6),
where x is in mms and t is in seconds. Analytically and graphically determine:
a) The amplitude.
b) The phase angle.
Also, determine the displacement, velocity and acceleration at t = 5 seconds.

1.3. For each of the following periodic functions, determine the frequency and then plot
the function over one cycle.
a) x = 3 cos 50t + 5 cos 20t,
b) x = 4 cos 25t + 3 sin 50t,
where x is mms and t is in seconds.

1.4. Determine the harmonic analysis (Fourier analysis) of each of the periodic functions
shown in Fig. 1.

1.1 a) x = 4cos(2.5t) mm

b) x = 4cos(2.5t - 180 ) mm

c) x = 6cos(2.5t - 90 ) mm

d) x = 6cos(2.5t - 270 ) mm

e) x = 8cos(2.5t - 45 ) mm

f) x = 8cos(2.5t + 45 ) mm
1.2 The amplitude = 21.67 mm

The phase angle = 108

The displacement at (t = 5 seconds) = -8.316 mm
The velocity at (t = 5 seconds) = 60.04 mm/s
The acceleration at (t = 5 seconds) = 74.84 mm/s2
1.3 a) The frequency = 5 Hz
b) The frequency = 3.979 Hz
