2. It is often used in combination with simple past. Past continuous is used for the action

which was going on at sometime in the past (long action) where as simple past is used to

express an action which happened in the mean time (short action).

mainly used when we want to emphasize the time period of an action in the present.

in subordinate clause also.

Rule No-138:

The participle being a verbal adjective should be related to a proper subject of a


reference. If the subject is lacking or if the wrong subject is used the whole sentence will
be wrong.
