Breakfast Around the World

What do you eat first thing in the morning? The first and – according to some people – most
important meal of the day means different things for different people in countries around the world.
Below, we look at some of our favourite traditional breakfasts eaten all over the world.
INDIA
Known for its cuisine, India has a rich and varied menu when it comes to meals and breakfast is
no different. A typical breakfast in India will depend on the region and is different from north to
south, but we’ve picked some of our favourites. Breakfast itself can be spicy and vegetarian
options are common. Chai, or tea, is a popular drink option with breakfast. Breads such as roti or
dosa are served with different yoghurt dips and fruit chutneys. Spiced potatoes, rice, vegetables
and stuffed pancakes are other common options. With so much choice, it’s difficult to decide
what to have!
SPAIN
Breakfast in Spain is an important but simple affair, as you have to have room for lunch! Options
include tortilla, which is a tasty omelette made of eggs and potato; or pan con tomate, which
consists of a toasted bread roll with olive oil, tomatoes and sometimes ham. Loved by both adults
and children, and very popular with visitors, hot chocolate and churros – a sweet pastry to be
dipped in hot chocolate – is another possible choice. Not to be missed, however, is the café con
leche – a strong cup of espresso with hot milk. If you try it, you won’t be disappointed!
JAPAN
Japanese food is famous around the world and breakfast doesn’t disappoint! Breakfast is usually
quite light and the traditional Japanese breakfast consists of a piece of grilled fish, miso soup and
rice (sometimes served with a raw egg) and must be one of the healthiest on our list. Sometimes,
if people need to be quick, toast and a green salad is eaten instead. Green tea or coffee are
popular drinks with breakfast.
