IGCSE First Language English (0500) – Exam Formats

1. Directed Writing (Paper 1 Question 1)


Common formats: magazine article, speech, report, formal letter, interview transcript.

Use appropriate tone, structure, and purpose.

A. Magazine Article Format


• Title

• Subtitle (optional)

• Introduction – hook + context

• Body paragraphs – 2–3 ideas with facts/opinions

• Conclusion – final thought or call to action

Language: semi-formal, persuasive.

B. Speech Format
Start with: Good morning teachers and fellow students,

• Introduction – purpose

• 3 main points

• Conclusion – strong ending

Language: persuasive, emotive.

C. Report Format
• Title

• Introduction – purpose

Language: formal and objective.

D. Formal Letter Format


• Your Address

• Date

• Receiver’s Address

• Greeting (Dear Sir/Madam,)

• Sign-off: Yours faithfully/sincerely

Language: formal and polite.

E. Interview Transcript
Format:

Interviewer (I): question

Guest (G): answer

Language: semi-formal, clear Q&A.

2. Summary Writing (Paper 1 Question 3)


• No intro or conclusion

• No bullets

• Past tense, third person

• Own words

• One continuous paragraph
