Self-Assessment Report
For this activity, I recorded a 2–3 minute presentation on the topic “My Career Aspirations in
the Field of Computer Science.” I chose this topic because I am familiar with it and
comfortable expressing my thoughts about my future goals. After watching the recording
carefully, I analyzed my tone, pitch, inflection, clarity, and conciseness to identify strengths and
areas for improvement.
The overall tone of my presentation was formal and mildly enthusiastic. Since the topic was
related to my career aspirations, the tone was appropriate for an academic or professional
audience such as college faculty or peers. However, I noticed that at certain points my tone
sounded slightly monotonous, especially when explaining details. While the content was
relevant, varying my tone more could make the presentation sound more confident and engaging.
In terms of clarity and conciseness, I spoke clearly for most of the presentation, and my
pronunciation was understandable. I maintained a steady pace, but there were moments where I
spoke a little too fast due to nervousness. This affected clarity slightly, especially when I tried to
include multiple ideas in one sentence. I did not use much technical jargon, but a few phrases
could have been simplified further to avoid ambiguity. I also noticed some repetition of words
such as “basically” and “actually,” which reduced conciseness and made parts of the speech
sound less polished.
Regarding pitch and inflection, my pitch remained mostly neutral. While this helped maintain
seriousness, it reduced emotional expression. I did not emphasize key points strongly, which
made some important ideas blend into the rest of the speech. Better use of pauses and stress on
keywords would help highlight important information and improve audience engagement.
Based on this self-evaluation, there are several specific improvements I can make. I should
consciously vary my tone and pitch to avoid sounding flat and to express enthusiasm more
clearly. Practicing controlled pauses will help improve clarity and confidence. Reducing filler
words and organizing points more clearly before speaking will enhance conciseness. Finally,
rehearsing the presentation aloud before recording can help improve fluency and overall
delivery.
Overall, this activity helped me become more aware of my verbal communication style. With
regular practice and mindful adjustments, I can significantly improve my tone, clarity, and
effectiveness as a speaker.
