COMMON CONVENTIONS
Basic Information
Short films are popular in the UK,
theyre shown at festivals and
are often released by
independent companies.
The most popular form of short
films are live action, animation,
and documentaries.
Characters
Limited amount of main characters;
around 1-3.
This helps the viewers to relate to the
films.
One main narrative, protagonist.
Twists
A short film often contains a twist
to keep the viewers engaged and
interested.
They keep the audience on the
edge of their seats
Length
Typically short films last
around 5-10 minutes
However the maximum
duration is 35 minutes
otherwise it would be a regular
film.
My brief has said that my final
Short Film must be no longer
than 5 minutes
Filming and Editing
Basic equipment such as an SLR and a
tripods is used since theres a low
budget.
No CGI is used in short films; explosions
or special effects since the budget of
the film is low and you would have to
pay to get good quality special effects
and the equipment to go with it.
Voice-overs are very common as they
provide the viewers/audience
information of whats going on quickly
so that they understand the plot.
Plot
Allows viewers to connect and relate to
the characters or the situation in the film
Theyre realistic so that they
influence/inform their viewers
Normal events take place in everyday
situations, this is to make them easier and
more effective for the viewers to
understand.
Problems to which the protagonist has to
overcome.
