BONES
The human skeleton has several functions, such as:
Protection of internal organs
Supporting weight
Different types of bones have differing shapes related
to their particular function
What are the different types of bones? How are they
categorized?
+
Types of Bones:
5 types:
Flat
Short
Long
Irregular
Sesamoid
+
+
Flat Bones
Their function is to protect internal organs such as the
brain, heart, and pelvic organs
They are somewhat flattened, and because of this they
are able to provide some protection, like a shield
They can also provide large area for the attachment of
muscles
They can be found in the skull, thoracic cage, and the
pelvis
An example of this would be
the
sternum
+
Long Bones
They support weight and facilitate movement
They are longer than they are wide
They are mostly located in the appendicular skeleton
and include bones in the lower limbs, and some bones
in the upper limbs
An example of this would be
the femur
+
Short Bones
They are as long as they are wide
They are generally cube shapes
Located in the wrist and ankle joints
These bones provide stability and some movement
An example of this would be
the carpals
+
Sesamoid Bones
These bones are embedded in tendons
These small, round bones are commonly found in the
tendons of the hands, knees, and feet
They function to protect tendons from stress and wear
An example of this would be
the patella
+
Irregular Bones
These bones vary in shape and structure, and therefore
do not fit into any other category
They generally have a complex shape, which helps to
protect internal organs
An example of this would be
the vertebrae
