Land Resource Management and Degradation

Land is a non-renewable resource that supports all life, but it is being depleted through human activities like poor farming practices, deforestation, and industrial pollution. While mankind uses land for cultivation and development, these activities can lead to issues like soil erosion, desertification, and land degradation if not done sustainably. Protection of natural lands is needed along with reclamation of wastelands, which provides environmental and economic benefits. Proper classification and use of wastelands according to difficulty of reclamation can help mitigate issues of land degradation.

Land as a

resource

What is it:
• It is non renewable resource
• It puts up the survival cycle for all the
beings
• But it is being depleted day by day
• If this land is used utilized carefully it
can be considered as a RENEWABLE
RESOURCE
 Uses of land by the mankind:
• Cultivating food , maintaining pastures for domestic
animals
• Developing industries to provide goods supporting
industries by creating towns and cities

 Protection of the land by mankind:

• The rational use of land needs careful planning.
• Protection areas like NATIONAL PARKS ,WILDLIFE
SANCTURIES etc but these are to be provided in natural
ecosystems which are undisturbed .
• Land degradation:
• Land degradation refers to a decline in the overall quality
of the soil ,water or vegetation condition commonly
caused by all the HUMAN ACTIVITIES .
• Depletion of this land results in soil erosion ,
desertification, landslides etc.
• Major causes:
• Wind erosion
• Deforestation
• Water erosion
• Poor farming practices
• Livestocks including overgrazing
• Industrial waste causing pollution
• Soil erosion
 Effects of land degradation:
• Decline in vegetation
• Loosing the quality of the soil
• Salinity of the land increases
• Drought conditions arise
• Soil erosion
• Shortage of the building materials
• Brackishness of the land
• Water erosion
Soil erosion
 What is it:
• The detachment of the soil and the rock fragments from the
original site are transported and deposited at the new locality
.

 Types of soil erosion :

• Normal and geological soil erosion(natural erosion)
• Accelerated soil erosion (loss of soil by mans activity)

Desertification
 What is It :
• Transformation of aerable land to desert,as by
change in climate or destructive usage of land
• It’s a globally concerned issue
• This leads to the abandoned desert like
landscapes
 Causes:
• Overgrazing
• Deforestation
• Over cultivation
• Drought
• Climate change
• Improper irrigation
 Leads to:
• Reduced biological productivity and water
availability
• Loss of biodiversity and food security
• Increased soil erosion .
 Wasteland reclamation:
• Unless and until we safeguard our GOOD lands ,we may
eventually face a serious shortage of food grains ,
vegetables, fruits ,fodder and fuel wood .
• Conservation of soil , protecting the existing cultivable
lands and reclaiming the already depleted wastelands .
 Need for wasteland development :
• It provides a source of income for the rural poor
• It ensures constant supply of fuel ,fodder and
timber for local use
• This program helps to maintain proper ecological
balance
 WASTELANDS CLASSIFICATION AND
USES :
• These reclaimable lands can be used for
