Modern Housing Prototypes: - Roger Sherwood

The document summarizes Roger Sherwood's book "Modern Housing Prototypes" which examines notable housing projects from the 20th century. It presents El Pueblo Ribera Court, designed by Rudolph Schindler in 1923, as a case study of detached housing. Key elements include private open spaces, medium density, common spaces facing the courtyard, and solar control through orientation and overhangs. The project consisted of 12 single-floor U-shaped units with private patios, oriented to maximize natural light and sunlight access.

INTRODUCTION
o THE MAIN GOAL WHICH IS BEING PRESENTED IN THIS BOOK IS TO REEXAMINATION OF SOME OF THE GREAT HOUSING
PROJECTS OF THIS CENTURY IS APPROPRIATE AT A TIME WHEN THE DESIGN OF HOUSING COMMANDS THE ATTENTION
OF ARCHITECTS THE WORLD AROUND.

o THE CASE STUDIES OFFERD IN THIS BOOK ARE EXAMPLES OF HOUSING SPREAD ACROSS THE GLOBE. THIS WILL HELP US
UNDERSTAND THE ANALOGOUS PROBLEMS WHICH CAN LEAD TO NEW THINKING AND HELP US SLOVE PRESENT DAY
PROBLEMS.

o THE NOTION OF USING AN ANALOGOUS PROBLEM AS A PARADIGM FOR GAINING INSIGHT INTO A PRESENT
PROBLEM IS NOT, OF COURSE, NEW. IN ARCHITECTURE INVENTION OFTEN PASSES THROUGH A PHASE OF GROPING,
WHERE IDEAS ABOUT A PROJECTED BUILDING FORM ARE TRIGGERED BY EXPOSURE TO SOME EXISTING BUILDING
WITH A SIMILAR PROGRAM, FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICATION, OR SITE CONDITION. THE ANALOGOUS BUILDING THEN
BECOMES IN SOME SENSE A MODEL OR A PROTOTYPE.

o THE USE OF PROTOTYPES IS ESPECIALLY USEFUL IN THE DESIGN OF HOUSING BECAUSE HOUSING LENDS ITSELF READILY
TO SYSTEMATIC, TYPOLOGICAL STUDY. MOST BUILDING TYPES, SUCH AS THEATERS, SCHOOLS, FACTORIES, OR EVEN
OFFICE BUILDINGS, HAVE TO RESPOND TO DIFFERENT PROGRAMS AND ARE RARELY CONSISTENT AND REPETITIVE.
HOUSING, BECAUSE IT CONSISTS OF REPEATING UNITS WITH A CONSTANT RELATION TO VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL
CIRCULATION, CAN MORE LOGICALLY BE STUDIED IN TERMS OF ITS TYPOLOGICAL VARIATIONS.

o WHATEVER HIS CULTURAL, ECONOMIC, AND TECHNICAL CONSTRAINTS, EVERY ARCHITECT IS CONFRONTED WITH
CHOICES AND QUESTIONS ABOUT ORGANIZATION. HOW WILL THE INDIVIDUAL APARTMENT BE ARRANGED? HOW
WILL THE MIX OF DIFFERENT APARTMENT TYPES BE ACCOMMODATED? WHAT CIRCULATION SYSTEMS—HORIZONTAL
AND VERTICAL CAN SERVICE THIS MIX OF APARTMENTS? WHAT IS THE BEST CIRCULATION SYSTEM? WALKUP OR
SINGLE-LOADED, DOUBLE-LOADED, OR SKIP-STOP CORRIDOR SYSTEM? WHERE IS ENTRANCE AND ACCESS TO THE
VERTICAL CIRCULATION SYSTEM? WHAT BUILDING FORM DOES THIS COLLECTION OF UNITS TAKE: LOW-RISE OR HIGH-
RISE, ROWHOUSE, SLAB, OR TOWER? THESE FUNDAMENTAL ORGANIZATIONAL QUESTIONS ARE PERTINENT TO ANY
HOUSING

Detached and Semidetached Housing
• A detached home is a stand-alone, one-family residence.
• A semi-detached house is one that is joined to another by a common wall that they share.
Often, each house's layout is a mirror image of the other

Key Elements
• A private open space.
• Used for Medium Density Population.
• Common spaces are facing open space.

• The first concept is the creation and composition of the units
through hierarchical circulation diagram.
• Each unit has a main central area with two lateral masses on
either end.
• The other concept was to design a unit with the most privacy and
still have great views.
First Floor • Each unit is U-shaped with a roof terrace which provides the most
privacy and still have great views.
• The final concept is the application of the architecture as
landscape and the integration between site and structure.
• Material used were concrete , redwood and glass.
• Narrow buildings , open floor plans and vegetative shading
promote natural ventilation

Row Housing

• A row house is, as the name suggests, one of many houses in a row. The style is mostly found in
densely populated urban areas, where space is limited. The row house style has flourished for
various reasons
Key Elements
• Two stories. Some row houses have had a business on the bottom, like a grocery store, and one
home upstairs, but typically, these are for one family to live in -- on both floors.
• Traditional layout. Similar to many homes, the living room is usually in the front, followed by a
dining room and then a kitchen in the back. The bedrooms are upstairs. There is sometimes a
basement or partial basement.
• Side hallways. The hallway is usually on the side of a row house, with the stairway leading up to
the second floor.
• In row housing they share two common walls.

5 Rowhouses (Weissenhof Exhibition, Stuttgart, 1927)

By J.J.P. Oud

•Made for the Weissenhof exhibition in 1927

•Weissenhof was ment to be an demonstration
and experiment of models for innovations in the
fields of technology, construction and
architecture.
•In this exhibition so many known architects
would participate, like Le Corbusier, Mies van
der Rohe and Gropius.
•J.J.P. Oud was one of the few architects who
designed a house in Weissenhof that could be
called a normal house. Fig.1- The south facade
•Maybe this is connected to the fact that Oud
had been working on social housing in
Rotterdam.
•. Oud belived that : “ Architecture is art which
arises from life. The design is produced by the
interaction of form and function”.

5 Rowhouses (Weissenhof Exhibition, Stuttgart, 1927)
•Oud wanted to make a small dwelling by the
principles of simplicity, efficiency and functionality.
• As a part of the assignment,
•The 5 houses have the same layout and size.
•It should be a continuous row of houses who were
simple, but good-looking.
•The houses have 3 storeys, the 2 you can see and
the cellar that is underneath the ground.
•The height of the building, above the ground, is
approx 6 meters.

•They suggested among other things that,

• A house should have a food closet and a serving
hatch in the kitchen,
•Balcony for small housework,
•Independent access to all bedrooms
•Toilet separated from the bathroom

Ouds work can be used as an

inspiration for architects
today. It can not be used
directly, but many of his ideas
and points can be used:

•Rowhouses reduces the cost

of the building
• The construction method can
speed up the construction
time and
•The facades can be used to
explain the function of the
rooms behind in a
characteristic way.

Narkomfin Apartments, Moscow, Russia
 The apartments were of different types k type and f
type.
 These apartments have a small kitchen from 4.5
square meters, a large dining room with double
heights. On the upper floor two bedrooms and a
bathroom. These flats designed for families who still
followed the traditional way of life.
 These one-room apartments were designed for
singles or young couples. The room was 3.6 meters
tall and had a bedroom upstairs. In this type of story,
instead of a kitchen was an “element of cooking”
and instead of bath, shower and toilet.
 The idea was that the occupants of these flats
would prefer to prepare their meals in communal
kitchens rather than in their small kitchen .

between two rooms and no kitchen. These units are benefiting
from the beer garden, which was on deck and two rooms, a
living room, looking west and the other bedroom, east thereby
allowing sunlight to take all day
 All apartments have windows on both sides of the front for easy
ventilation. The bedroom faced the east and the living rooms,
one of whose walls is almost all glass, to the west. This allowed to
wake up at sunrise
 This is a framed structure on piles low with 4 meters except the
volume ends with unique character, made of reinforced
concrete .

Price tower

Frank Lloyd Wright
•The Price Tower was the realization of an idea Wright had developed
twenty- seven years earlier in New York City's St. Mark's Tower of
1929.
•St. Mark's was a design for a freestanding tower, and the
cantilevered, tree-like construction
•the crossed-wall ideas were radically new, the superimposition of a
diagonal organization (here a square rotated thirty degrees) was
not.
which uses a hexagonal system.
• Experiments with towers or rotated square configurations and
crossed-wall interior cores continued after St. Mark's Tower.
• connected together, forming a continuous, undulating slab
twenty-five stories high rather than the nineteen of St. Mark's. Fig. 01- plans.
•al- though not made of rotated squares in plan, is still a version of
the principle of cantilevering floors from a central core.
•It is all there: crossed walls, two-story living room at the corner,
balconies, and three floors because there were extra bedrooms in
the program.

and can be seen even printed on the floor.
• The copper grids shading windows has a width of 50 cm and

Spaces
•The 67 meter high tower is divided into 19 floors.
• One of the quadrants, southwest, was assigned to departments double height and the remaining three offices.
•The quadrant for residential use changes shape compared to those devoted to offices, offering more according to their
function spaces and being noticed by the forged externally surrounded by vertical elements that give dynamism to the
entire building.
•Most plants harboring three offices and half of a duplex apartment.
•The original project was undertaken to St Mark apartment, but at the Price Tower should be multipurpose spaces, a
building with offices, shops and apartments.
•The HC Price Company was the primary tenant occupying the top two floors of the tower, the remaining offices and
apartments double height would become a source of revenue for the company.
• The offices were occupied by professionals, will also be installed in a plant the Public Service Company of Oklahoma.
•Opened stores offering high-end products, a beauty salon was installed
•The sixteenth floor was occupied by a police station and penthouse office suite included Mr. Harold Price with high
ceiling and a private terrace

Structure
•This building was the first experiment Wright for a multipurpose tower, a tall, thin, rich structure in detail, whose purpose was
to combine business offices, shops and apartments. Price Tower is the only skyscraper architect.
•The Price tower is supported by a central trunk whose axes divide the inside of the vertical tower in four separate quadrants
forming four elevator shafts which are anchored to the ground by deep foundation, like a tree and its main root.
•The nineteen floors of the building are projected cantilevered from this central core, like the branches of a tree.
•The outer walls hang floors and are coated with “leaves” in copper. None of the exterior walls are structural, horizontal
screens are just resting on cantilevered floors.
•The ground floor resembles a cast bronze plaque inlaid with logo Price Company, from which emerges a network of
parallelograms in which all exterior walls, interior partitions, doors and built-ins are placed.
•Each floor has a curious geometry as “pinwheel” light fixtures, stairs, pillars and canopies are assembled at sharp angles.
Even the parking stormwater drainage has three sides.

Materials
•The materials used by Wight were innovative for a skyscraper 50s Concrete walls, floors pigmented concrete, aluminum
windows and doors, with reliefs of patinated copper.
•The cutting of aluminum windows and arrangement of colored plants have a visual continuity of the whole design.
•Because the exterior walls needed no columns to support the weight, Wright was able to develop his imagination on the
facade covering with embossed copper panels with geometric figures of his own invention which he gave a greenish
color, bands of windows and angular fins copper, such as leaves, protect rooms from the sun.
