Forensic Chemistry Overview and Applications

This document provides an overview of forensic chemistry and the capabilities of the Forensic Chemistry Division of the National Bureau of Investigation (FCD-NBI) laboratory. It describes forensic chemistry as the application of chemical principles to examine physical evidence to aid in criminal investigations. The FCD-NBI is tasked with qualitatively and quantitatively examining evidence such as blood, drugs, explosives, and poisons using instruments like UV/IR spectrophotometers and gas chromatographs. The document also lists the sections within the FCD-NBI laboratory including Biology, Chemistry, Dangerous Drugs, DNA, Physics, Records, Research and Instrumentation, and Toxicology.

FORENSIC CHEMISTRY
FORENSIC CHEMISTRY – the application of chemical principles
in the examination of physical evidence fall within this field. It plays
a very important part in the speedy investigation and solution of
crimes.
CAPABILITIES of the FCD-NBI laboratory:
- tasked to examine the chemical nature and composition of various
specimen such as: blood and other body fluids, gunpowder,
explosives, poisons, dangerous drugs, wines, etc. Examinations of
materials may be:
1. Qualitative – determining what constituents are present
2. Quantitative – determining how much of the constituents are present
For evidence submitted in very small amounts, high precision
instruments such as: the ultraviolet (UV) & infrared (IR)
spectrophotometers and the gas chromatograph can be utilized.
DEFINITION of FORENSIC CHEMISTRY

- a branch of science which deals with the

application of chemical principles involve in the
solution of problems arising in the administration
of justice.
