Types of Education
What is Education?
• The word education is derived from Latin word
“educare” which means “to bring-up”.
• Education is also derived from another Latin world
“educere” which means “to lead out”. Education
as educere is more acceptable as it means leading an
individual from ignorance to knowledge.

• Modification of behaviour of an individual for healthy social
adjustment in the society is education.
• Education is an activity, which attempts to develop individuals’
personality and prepares them for productive membership of
the/a society.
• Education transforms man from a ‘two legged animal’ into
human. (to behave like a man/human being not an animal.)
• Education can be defined as the process of imparting or
acquiring knowledge and habits through instruction or study.

Meaning of Education
1. Education is the process of bringing desirable changes into the
behavior of human beings.
2. It can also be defined as the “Process of imparting or acquiring
knowledge or habits through instruction or study”.
3. The behavioral changes must be directed towards a desirable
end.
4. They should be acceptable socially, culturally and Comically and
result in a change in knowledge, skill, attitude and
understanding.

2. Chronologically graded structure.
3. Uniform.
4. Subject oriented.
5. Full time.
6. Leads to certificates, diplomas, degrees.
Non Formal Education
Non Formal Education Non Formal Education is: 1. Flexible.
2. Life, environment and learner oriented.
3. Diversified in content and method.
4. Built on learner participation.
5. It mobilizes local resources.
6. It enriches human and environmental potential. E.g. Open
University’s courses and VU
