Introduction to Pharmacy Informatics

This document provides an introduction to pharmacy informatics. It defines pharmacy informatics as the scientific field that focuses on medication-related data and knowledge within healthcare systems, including acquisition, storage, analysis, use and dissemination of information. It discusses the needs for pharmacy informatics, such as considerable time pressure on pharmacists to review prescriptions and the large number of prescriptions to review without sufficient patient data. The document also provides examples of pharmacy informatics applications, such as computerized provider order entry and e-prescribing. Finally, it discusses the incorporation of pharmacoinformatics into the pharmacy curriculum in Malaysia in 2002 and the introduction of pharmacy information systems in Malaysian Ministry of Health facilities in 2006.

Needs for Pharmacy Informatics
• Considerable time pressure to look at each and every prescription
• The large number of prescription to review
• Pharmacist reviewing prescription without having much detail of
patient data
• Difficulty in clarifying prescription orders
• Huge demands for clinical knowledge
Working in pairs, discuss on the following:

1)What are the skills needed in pharmacy informatics?

2)What are the opportunities offered by pharmacy informatics
in terms of the pharmacy services?
3)What are the challenges in implementing pharmacy
informatics in the pharmacy services?
