Professional Responsibility
As a project manager, you will find yourself in many
unique situations, different organizations, and possibly
even different countries. Even if you never get
involved in international project mgt, you will still
come in contact with people from different cultures
and backgrounds than yours. If you work as a contract
project manager, you will be exposed to many
different organizations that each has its own cultures
and ways of doing things. You should always strive to
act in a professional, ethical and nonoffensive manner
in these situations.
Ensuring Integrity
• The correct application of the project management
processes you have learned will ensure the integrity
of the product. The effective execution of the
planning, Executing and Monitoring & Controlling
processes, including documenting scope, performing
quality inspections, measuring performance, and
taking corrective actions, will ensure that a quality
product is produced that satisfies the requirements
of the stakeholders (and the project plan)
Ensuring Integrity
Ensuring Personal Integrity-
• For personal integrity stick to the Project Management Professional Code
of Conduct (www.pmi.org) (For example Personal gain should never be a
factor in any project decision)
• Truthfulness and integrity involving information regarding your own
background and experience and also regarding project circumstances as
well.
• Conflict of Interest – When your personal interests are put above the
interests of the project or when you use your influence to cause others to
make a decision in your favor without regard for the project outcome.
• Professional Demeanor –You cannot control what others say or do but
you can control how you respond. As a project manager you have a good
deal of influence over your project team members so encourage them to
understand organization’s policies, cultural diversity, standards and
regulations, customer service and standards of performance
Ensuring Personal Integrity-
• Truthful Be responsible for truthful reporting all
information in your possession to stakeholders,
customers, the project sponsor, and the public.
Always be upfront regarding the project’s progress.
• Laws and Regulations Compliance-Follow all
applicable laws and regulations that apply to your
industry, orgn, or project. Follow also the ethical
standards and principles that may govern your
industry or the state or country you are working in.
Ensuring Personal Integrity-
• Confidentiality of Information- Do not disclose
sensitive or confidential information or use it in any
way for personal gain.
• Intellectual Property- Intellectual Property is owned
by the business or person that created it. You may
have to pay for it or ask for written permission to use
the property.
• Balancing Stakeholder’s Interests- some stakeholders
gain and others lose by implementing the project
therefore stakeholders have different interests and
needs and one of your jobs is to balance the needs of
the stakeholders.
Ensuring Personal Integrity-
• Competing needs – Because stakeholders do not work in the
same area they have competing needs and interests for
example in an IT project one may be concerned about system
security while another is concerned about ease of use. This is
where you have to examine the needs against project
objectives, set priorities and then use your negotiation and
communication skills to convince the stakeholders of
priorities.
• Dealing with Issues and Problems- Problems and especially
conflicts will always occur on your project, it is part of the
process. Apply conflict resolution techniques to resolve
conflicts and also handle problems professionally.
Ensuring Personal Integrity-
• Balancing constraints- One of the three constraints may be a
primary driver of the project and the other a secondary one
for example a project may be meant for a particular purpose
and as such time becomes the primary driver. Do not simply
divert the primary constraint ie from time to quality because
someone has seen a something wrong in quality.
Ensuring Product Integrity
• As a project manager one of your professional
responsibilities is to ensure integrity of the
project management process, the product,
and your own personal conduct.
• A product that has integrity is one that is
complete and sound or fit for use and has
satisfied the objectives it was meant for.
