Sound to Electricity: A Green Solution

This document introduces a project to convert sound energy into electrical energy. It discusses how sound is a mechanical wave that can be used to generate electricity through principles of thermodynamics. Two methods are described: 1) Using a diaphragm connected to a conductor in a magnetic field to induce current via Faraday's law of induction. 2) Using a piezoelectric material, whose crystals generate electric charges when mechanically strained by sound waves. Potential applications include powering street lights from vehicle noise or increasing energy production at nuclear power plants. In conclusion, sound energy represents an untapped renewable resource that could help meet growing electricity demands.

SOUND….

 CAN YOU IMAGINE YOUR LIFE WITHOUT YOUR COMPUTER, MOBILE,

LIGHTS AND OTHER DAILY USED APPLIANCES, IT IS REALLY VERY HARD
TO IMAGINE OUR LIFE WITHOUT THESE ELECTRIC APPLIANCES.
 ELECTRIC CONSUMPTION IS INCREASING DRASTICALLY, ON THE OTHER
HAND PRODUCTION OF ELECTRIC POWER IS LIMITED.

 IT’S TIME TO THINK OF SOME ALTERNATIVE AND GREEN.

 HERE WE ARE INTRODUCING AN ALTERNATIVE :

INTRODUCTION
 Converting sound into electricity works on a simple mechanism. If heat is applied to any
enclosed area, the air inside it expands increasing the pressure inside. This pressurized air,
then moves through a filter or opening on one side, producing a simple clear sound at a
standard frequency. That is the basic idea behind the system. Focused and directed frequency
makes it easier to extract energy.
 If it sounds too good to be true, well then you might be surprised to hear that it actually
works! It works via a very simple and well known process. If you take a source of heat and apply
to any enclosed area, the air inside it will expand increasing the pressure inside. This
pressurized air will then move through a filter or opening on one side, producing a simple
clear sound at a standard frequency. That’s the key to the system. The more focused and
directed the frequency is, the easier it is to extract energy from.
 We all know sound energy is a mechanical energy which travels in the form of wave.
Longitudinal waves are of alternating pressure deviation from the equilibrium pressure,
causing local region of compression and rarefaction, while transverse wave (in solid) are
waves of alternating shear and stress at right angle to the direction of propagation. When
sound wave travel through a medium mater in that medium is periodically displaced and thus
oscillates with sound wave. The sound wave displace back and forth between the potential
energy of compression or lateral displacement strain of the matter and the kinetic energy of
the oscillation. As sound energy is a mechanical energy it could be converted into
electricity as mechanical energy could be converted into electricity by the law of thermodynamics.
AIM: TO CONVERT SOUND ENERGY TO
ELECTRICAL ENERGY
PRINCIPLE

 AS SOUND WAVE IS A MECHANICAL WAVE WHEN IT TRAVELS THROUGH A

MEDIUM IT DISTURBS THE PARTICLE OF THE MEDIUM THESE
DISTURBANCE CREATED BY SOUND COULD BE USED TO PRODUCE
ELECTRICITY BY THE LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS.
 IN OUR DAILY USE WE USE MANY PRODUCTS IN WHICH THE CONVERSION
BETWEEN SOUND ENERGY AND ELECTRIC ENERGY TAKES PLACE FOR
E.G.:-

 MIC , SPEAKER , MOBILE PHONE ,TRANSDUCERS.

CONVERSION OF SOUND INTO ELECTRICITY
 The gadget reverses the functioning of a normal speaker which vibrates to create sound when
electricity is passed through it. It uses sound and converts it to electricity. The gadget can come in
handy in heavily polluted areas like roads and construction sites.
 When sound waves hit the diaphragm of the speaker, the magnet and the coil inside interact thus
creating electrical energy. This is then stored in a power bank which could power up light
 With this low-cost light, rural communities would be able to have access to electricity especially
light to help improve their way of life. With this invention, students will be able to study in the
comfort of their homes. A larger speaker with a lot more devices added can harness enough
electricity for the whole community.
 The first method illustrates the use of the “faradays law of electromagnetic induction” which
states that the induced electromotive force (Ԑ) in any closed circuit is equal to the negative of the
time rate of change of the magnetic flux (Φ) through the circuit. ε=-dΦB/dt (2) In this method we
will place a very thin layer of diaphragm which will be fluctuated by the pressure created by the
sound waves. Now we can attach a conductor to the diaphragm which will be placed between the
magnetic poles. So when the diaphragm oscillates then the conductor will have magnetic flux
around it change and as per the faradays law the emf is induced in the conductor causing the
current to flow to conductor. Generated voltage (emf) = (Velocity of Conductor) X (Magnetic
Field) X (Length of Conductor) As the frequency of the sound waves is high thus oscillations will
be fast and considerable amount of electricity could be produced. But only limitation is that we
require sound of very high decibels to generate usable quantity of electric power.
PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIAL
• PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS ARE TRANSDUCERS,
ITS’S CRYSTALS COULD CONVERT MECHANICAL
STRAIN TO ELECTRICITY.

• THE CRYSTALS ARE FORMED NATURALLY E.G. QUARTZ,

BONE, DNA.

• AS WELL AS ARTIFICIALLY ZnO, Lithium Nibatet etc…

PROPERTIES
PIEZOELECTRIC EFFECT
WHEN THE CRYSTAL IS MECHANICALLY STRAINED (BY SOUND) OR WHEN IT
IS DEFORMED BY THE APPLICATION OF AN EXTERNAL STRESS, ELECTRIC
CHARGES APPEAR ON THE CRYSTALS SURFACES.
PIEZO ELECTRIC
EFFECT
ITS SCOPE

 IT COULD HELP US TO REDUCE THE SCARCITY OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY

 GLOBALLY AND HELP IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MANKIND.
 • THE NOISE POLLUTION IN THE ROAD WOULD BE ABLE TO CONVERT
 INTO ELECTRIC ENERGY AND LIGHTS THE STREET LIGHTNING,
 SIGNALS.
 • THE ELECTRICITY PRODUCE IN NUCLEAR POWER STATION COULD
 INCREASE AS THE SOUND PRODUCE DURING NUCLEAR FISSION ALSO
 COULD BE USED TO GET MORE ELECTRIC ENERGY.
 • THE NOISE POLLUTION IN INDUSTRIES COULD BE USED TO PRODUCE
 ELECTRICITY AND WORK CERTAIN LOW VOLTAGE MACHINE.
 • ITS SCOPE DOESN’T END…
CONCLUSION

 THE SOUND ENERGY IS THE UNEXPLORED

 SOURCE WHICH HAS ENORMOUS POTENTIAL TO
 MEET THE FUTURE GROWING REQUIREMENTS OF
 THE ELECTRICITY AND SERVE AS THE ECOFRIENDLY
 AND RENEWABLE SOURCE OF ENERGY.
