PATCH ARRAY ANTENNA
• A patch antenna is a type of radio antenna with a low profile, which can be mounted on a flat
surface. It is a kind of internal antenna on a PCB.
• Patch Array Antenna means an antenna fabricated using photolithographic techniques on a
printed circuit board (PCB).
• It is used in satellite communication, military purposes, GPS, mobile, missile systems etc as
due to its compact shape and light weight, less complexity and it’s ease of implementation
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
• Advantages
• Ease of manufacturing
• Enhanced directivity, and execute various other functions which would be complex with single element
• Microstrip patch antennas are efficient radiators.
• It has a support for both linear and circular polarization.
• Easy in integration with microwave integration circuits
• Disadvantages:
• Low impedance bandwidth.
• Low gain.
• Extra radiation occurs from its feeds and junctions.
• Excitation of surface waves.
• Size of micro strip antenna comes in both advantages and
DESIGN
• One of the important parameters for the design of a Microstrip patch antenna is the Frequency of
operation (fr).
• ISM Systems uses the frequency range 2.4GHz - 2.5GHz. Hence the designed antenna must be competent to
function in this frequency range. The resonant frequency chosen for our design is 2.4 GHz
Radius of Patch(a) is calculated by: Width of feedline is calculated using:
• we selected the value of the substrate (FR4) parameters relative Dielectric constant (εr) to be
4.4 and the substrate thickness (h) to be 1.66 mm.
• We have taken the inter elemental
Spacing to be 62.5 mm
• Using a microstrip calculater, we got
the dimensions as
• For a single circular patch optimal feed location is usually at one third distance from centre of the
patch. The feed location is calculated using the formula:
• We used the same values of height of the dielectric substrate (h)
and the same dielectric material (FR4) at the design frequency
