PERSON CENTERED
THERAPY
BY: JOHANNA TABALDO
CARL ROGERS
Carl Rogers is one of the most influential people in counseling
theory and practice (Corey pg. 165). Rogers believed that people
for the most part are trust worthy and have the capability in
understanding and resolving their own issues. Rogers tested this
theory then developed further research in establishing this theory.
There were four periods of development to this approach.
The person centered approach
shares many of the same
concepts as existential
approach. Rogers work is
mostly on the basis of trust .
Once trust is established the
client is able to move forward
in their growth process. Rogers
was firm in that people are trust
worthy. That people are able to
make the best choices for
themselves, and live a effective
and productive life.

THREE ATTRIBUTES
Rogers believed that if a therapist has three main attributes they can create a growth rising climate. In
this clients can move forward and become all that they can be. Person-Centered theory believed that if
therapists communicate these attributes the clients will not be as defensive and would become open to
themselves and others.
1. The therapist is congruent with the client
2. The therapist provides the client with unconditional positive regard
3. The therapist shows empathetic understanding to the client
FAITH
A therapist could incorporate faith into this
therapy. The person-centered therapy does not
just focus on techniques to get the client to take
action. It is all about attitude rather than theory
or knowledge. The therapist talks to the client
just as person to person. This allows faith to be
incorporated with out much difficulty. This
therapy is an attitude, so it wouldn’t be hard to
encourage the client. When a person has faith,
they have positive outlook on life. People who
are rooted in faith have hope and purpose. This
could easily be transmitted to the client in this
therapy compared to others.

CONGRUENCE
Congruence as explained before is a technique that therapists use.
Clients want someone who is real , genuine, and authentic. Congruence
means that a therapist is not being fake to a client, but being themselves.
This is what therapists use this to gain ground with the client. This is an
attitude that therapists use to help communicate.
TECHNIQUES
A technique apart of the treatment process is role of assessment. However,
this process is not like other mental health assessments. What matters is the
clients self assessment. According to person centered therapy the source of
knowledge about the client is the client themselves. This is about involving
the client as much as possible.
