Telangana's Role in Life Sciences

This document summarizes key scientists and IT parks in Telangana, India. It introduces four scientists: Thirumala-Devi Kanneganti, an immunologist researching innate immunity; Ganpathi Naresh Patwari, a chemist studying vibrational spectroscopy and hydrogen bonding; Ch. Mohan Rao, a molecular biologist who directed the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology; and provides brief backgrounds for each. It also describes two major IT parks in Hyderabad: Raheja Mindspace, a 97-acre park home to companies like Cognizant, JP Morgan, and Facebook; and The 'V' IT Park, a green-certified, 20-acre park with over 12

INTRODUCTION
 Hyderabad: While India is focusing on the need to increase self-reliance,
Telangana, considered as the hub of life sciences, with its significant capabilities
and contribution both in the areas of pharmaceuticals and vaccines has a key
role to play, say experts.
The State with its proactive industry-friendly policies has already attracted
global players in the industry. The government has set a target to double the
value of the ecosystem to $100 billion by 2030.
With a dedicated cluster approach, Telangana houses manufacturing and
R&Dfacilities for formulations, bulk drugs, vaccines and medical devices
besides several contract and clinical research facilities. It has become an
investment destination.

the Rose Marie Thomas Endowed Chair, Vice Chair of the Department of
Immunology, and Member at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Her
research interests include innate immunity and inflammatory cell death with a
primary focus on the role of NLR proteins and inflammasomes in health and
disease Kanneganti began her career in research as a PhD student studying
plant pathogens and fungal toxins. She then went on to do postdoctoral
fellowships at the University of Wisconsin and the Ohio State University studying
fungal genetics and plant innate immunity
Naresh Patwari
Ganpathi Naresh Patwari (born 13 December 1972) is an Indian chemist and a professor at the Department
of Chemistry of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Known for his studies on vibrational spectroscopy,
his work is reported to have widened the understanding of the fundamental concepts in hydrogen bonding.
Born on 13 December 1972 at Bodhan Mandal, Nizamabad district in the south Indian state of
undivided Andhra Pradesh (presently in Telangana) Naresh Patwari did his early schooling at his home
village. His undergraduate studies were at Osmania University and after earning a BSc in 1992, he moved to

doctoral research at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research to secure PhD in 2000 after which he did post-
doctoral work at Tohoku University during 2000–02 on a fellowship awarded by Japan Society for the
Promotion of Science and completed his post-doctoral work at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in
2003. Returning to India, he joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in April 2003
Patwari's studies have been documented by way of a number of articles and ResearchGate, an online article
repository of scientific articles, has listed several of them. He has also delivered invited talks at many seminars
and conferees. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India
for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of
the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to chemical sciences in 2017

the University of Hyderabad. He was a visiting associate at the National Institutes of
Health, US, during 1990–92. He was a visiting professor at the Tokyo Science
University, Japan during 1996. Visiting Scientist, UTMB, Galveston, USA, Visiting
Professor, Protein Research Institute, Osaka, Japan. Adjunct Professor, RMIT University,
Melbourne, Australia. He was positioned as director for the Centre for Cellular and
Molecular Biology in Hyderabad, India. He is CSIR-Distinguished Scientist and Sir JC
Bose National Fellow at CCMB  He was awarded in 1999 the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar
Prize for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, in the Medical
Sciences category
