Online learning
• Online learning is a meathod of learning/education whereby
students learn in a fully virtual environment
• First introduced in the 1990s with the creation of the internet
• Computer based education tool or system that enables
learning anywhere and at any time
• It utilised in distance Education, online education etc..
• E-learning offers the ability to share material in all kind of
formats as videos, slides,documents and pdf etc..
History of E-learning
• The term came to existence since 1999
• In the 1954 BF Skinner a hardware professor invented the teaching
machine which enabled schools to administrated programmed
instructions to their students
• In 1960 a computer based training programme known as PLATO
(Programmed Logic for Automated Teaching Operations) was
introduced to the world
• The first e learning system were realy set up to deliver information to
students in Britain for open universities
• The first MAC in the 1982 enabled students to have computers in
their home
• By the early 90es several schools had been setup that delivers courses
online only
• In 2000s businesses began to using e learning to train their emploies
Concept and definitions
• E- learning refers to use of information and communication
technologies to enable the access to online learning/teaching process
• Oblinger and Hawkins (2008) noted that E-learning is the use of few
multimedia technologies and the internet to increase learning quality
• Abbad etal (2009) defines “any learning that is enabled electronically
Types of Online
Learning
1- Computer managed learning
• Computers are used to manege and access learning process
• Operate through information database
• Two way communication between the student and the computer
• This could mean information such as lecture information training
materials curriculum informations etc..
2-Synchronous online learning
• It enables group of students to participate in a learning activity
together at the same time from any place in the world
• It includes online chats and online classes
• Zoom meeting
• Google meet
