DIGGING FOR TREASURE

WRITTEN BY - EDITH NESBIT

There was a family with six children , their
mother was not alive anymore and their
father’s business was failed and the children
tried to help their father by finding some
money .

They planned to find a treasure in their

garden and restore their family's fallen
fortune. Each of them suggested a different
idea and they tried it one by one…
STORY BEGINS...
They got some spades from the cellar and marked a square in the garden and began to dig. But they
only found worms and stones . So they tried to dig another part of the garden where the ground was
softer . They dug and dug but they found nothing.
SUDDENLY THEIR NEIGHBOUR
ALBERT ASK “HULLO ! WHAT ARE
YOU ALL DOING ?” THEN ALICE SAID
“WE’RE DIGGING FOR TREASURE.
WE HAVE GOT A MAP AND WE WILL
FIND A RED CLAY POT, FULL OF
GOLD AND PRECIOUS JEWELS AND
SPECIAL METALS.” THEN ALBERT
SNIGGERED AND SAID “NONSENSE”
OSWALD SAID “THEY WILL SHARE A
PART OF THE TREASURE IF HE
HELPS THEM IN DIGGING” AND
ALICE SAID THAT SHE WOULD GIVE
HIM HER SPADE TO DIG.
EVERYONE TOOK THERE
TURNS TO DIG , EXCEPT
ALBERT , HE WAS AFRAID
TO GO IN . “COME ON
ALBERT” SAID ALICE . BUT
HE WAS STILL AFRAID ,
ALICE SAID HIM TO KEEP
HIS EYES SHUT . BUT
ALBERT SAID THAT HE WILL
DIG WITH HIS BOOTS . SO ,
EVERYONE LET HIM DIG
WITH HIS BOOTS .
EVERYONE SURROUNDED
AROUND THE TUNNEL,
SUDDENLY , THE GROUND
GAVE WAY AND EVERYONE
TUMBLED IN A HEAP .
WHEN THEY GOT UP ,
ALBERT WAS STUCK QUITE
QUICKLY , HE COULD NOT
MOVE HIS LEGS AS THE
EARTH WAS HEAVY, HE
SCREAMED AND CRIED .
DICKY WENT TO CALL ALBERT’S UNCLE FOR HELP.
ALBERT’S UNCLE CAME AND DUG ALBERT OUT.

ALBERT’S UNCLE CAME WITH A LARGE SPADE AND

SAID ‘THIS PROMISES TO BE A PROTRACTED TASK’
AND STARTED TO DIG WITH HIS LARGE SPADE...

AFTER A WHILE , WIPING HIS FACE WITH A

HANDKERCHEIF, AND SAID “DIGGING IS A HOT
WORK--- AND MY CURIOSITY IS EXCITED.” AND
ALSO ASKED “HOW DID ALBERT GOT BURRIED”

“WE WERE DIGGING FOR TREASURE” SAID DORA...

ALICE ADDED THAT EVERYONE IS NEAR THE

PASSAGE THAT LEADS TO THE SECRET HOARD ,
WHEN THE TUNNEL FELL IN ON ALBERT... HIS FACE
WAS COVERED WITH MUD AND HE WAS LOOKING
VERY FUNNY. HIS FACE WAS FULL OF MOULD AND
STREAKED WITH CRYING. EVERYONE APOLOGISED
TO ALBERT BUT HE DIDN’T REPLY…
HIS UNCLE SAID THAT TO GET TREASURE IN THE
GARDEN IS VERY SLIM AS HE MADE A CAREFULL
STUDY ABOUT THE WHOLE SUBJECT…
BUT SUDDENLY ALBERT’S UNCLE FOUND SOMETHING
SHINING IN THE HOLE HE POINTED AND TO FIND THAT
WHAT WAS IT , HE DRAGGED ALBERT OUT OF THE
TUNNEL . OSWALD PICKED IT UP . IT WAS HALF A
CROWN . THEY LOOKED AT EACH OTHER WITH A
SHOCKING EXPRESSION . ALBERT’S UNCLE SAID “IT IS
FIVE PENCE FOR YOU EACH” . DICKY SAID THAT IT
WOULD BE FOUR PENCE EACH OR SOMETHING AS
THERE ARE SEVEN OF US . “OH , YOU COUNT ALBERT
AS ONE OF YOURSELVES?” SAID ALBERT’S UNCLE IN A
SURPRISED MANNER… “OFCOURSE WE DO” SAID ALICE . ALBERT
CHEERED AT THIS . HIS UNCLE WIPED HIS
FACE AND BEGAN TO PUT ON HIS COAT . THEN
HE STOPPED AND PICKED SOMETHING , IT
WAS ANOTHER HALF CROWN ! “TO THINK
THAT THERE SHOULD BE TWO !” HE SAID . HE
ALSO ADDED “IN ALL MY EXPERIENCE OF
BURRIED TREASURE , I NEVER HEARD SUCH A
I WISH ALBERT’S UNCLE WOULD
THING.”COME TREASURE
HUNTING WITH US REGULARLY AS HE IS HAVING
VERY SHARP EYES, FOR DORA SAYS THAT SHE WAS
LOOKING AT THE VERY SPOT WHERE THE SECOND
COIN WAS PICKED UP FROM AND NEVER SAW .
