Introduction to eLearning Basics

eLearning refers to online or technology-based learning. It allows for flexible delivery of content through various multimedia formats and platforms. Standards like SCORM enable interoperability and reusability of eLearning content across different systems. A learning management system is used to deliver, track and manage eLearning programs and content, while a content management system stores and publishes content. Though eLearning will not replace classrooms entirely, it provides organizations cost-effective ways to train employees through blended learning approaches.

What is eLearning?
• Simply stated it is training or learning that occurs
via on-line and/or offline technologies
• e-Learning, or electronic learning, is any type of
educational instruction that occurs through the
internet
• Whenever you watch a training video online,
participate in an academic discussion board, or
enroll in a virtual class, you’re engaged in e-
learning.
Some Facts
• Internet has started reshaping education.
• Education will not be the same in the next decade.
• Only about 1% of the population have taken an on-
line course. E-Learning is still new.
• 40% of Fortune 500 companies have established
corporate universities
(Moe and Blodgett, op. cit., endnote 21, p. 230.)
Characteristics of e-Learning
• Blended learning
can result in radical improvements in the effectiveness, reach and cost-
effectiveness of learning programs relative to traditional approaches.
• Multimedia
enables content presentation in several ways, every representation form
having it's own advantages and disadvantages. The chosen form of
representation should be related to the expected learning output.
• Delivery
content can be delivered by many different means choice of delivery tools and
be related to different variables (target group, learning objectives, budget,
infrastructure, learners’ prior knowledge).
Characteristics of e-Learning
In blended learning the learner will have a challenging
environment. If the ways the content is offered are varied,
different learning preferences and learning styles can be
addressed.

Examples :
• offline and online activities
• synchronous and asynchronous activities
• different multi media assets
• different didactical interactions
• different ways of delivering the content
• self-study and collaborative learning
• formal and informal learning
Characteristics of e-Learning
Different Multimedia formats of representation forms:
• Text
• Pictures
• Animations
• Audio
• Video
Characteristics of e-Learning
Some different platforms for delivery:
• Web browser
• PDA
• Mobile phone
• iPod
• PlayStation Portable
• podcast
Some different delivering options:
• online or offline
• electronic format or non-electronic format
• connected or stand-alone
Types of e-learning
• Informal e-learning
A growing number websites offer e-learning material at no cost. Informal e-
learning such as studying Open Course-Ware material can help you improve
your knowledge and polish your skills.
• Corporate e-learning
Many business train their employees through e-learning programs. Corporate
e-learning can be used to prepare professionals for success in their industry
and keep their knowledge current.
• Academic e-learning
Hundreds of e-learning degree programs offer a way for students to earn an
accredited degree through the internet.
E-learning Standards?
• Standards bring order to the world and e-learning
standards are bringing great new benefits to this
domain.
• Enable interoperability on different platforms
• Protection of investment on content development
• Exchange of content locally and globally
• A number of organizations working to develop e-
learning standards
• Airline Industry CBT Committee (AICC)
• Focus on standards for airline training e.g. tests, lessons, modules ect. (
www.aicc.org)
E-learning Standards Trends
• EDUCAUSE Institutional Management System
Project (IMS)
• Vendor group working to build standards for e-learning based
on work of AICC (www.imsglobal.org)
• Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL)
• US Federal government initiative (www.adl.org)
• Development of SCORM
• Alliance of Remote Institutional Authoring and
Distribution Network for Europe (ARIADNE)
• An industry association focusing on e-learning standards
issues (ariadne.unil.ch)
E-learning Standards Trends
• IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee
(IEEE LTSC)
• Accredits the standards for the US that emerge from the other
groups (ltsc.ieee.org)
• ISO/IEC JTC1 SC36 (ITLET)
• IT for Learning, Education and Training
• Advanced Learning Infrastructure Consortium
(ALIC)
• Japanese Consortium for promotion of e-leaning technology
and infrastructure (www.alic.gr.jp)
Standards are like Common Instructions
Surprisingly as it seems, before June 2000 we couldn’t
• Move a course from one web-based Learning
Management System (LMS server) to another.
• Run or reuse course content across different LMS
systems (multiple proprietary vendor tools).
• Create searchable learning content or media repositories
across different LMS environments Servers).

These are the main reasons we developed standards.

So Where are we now?
 Can eLearning become a “Killer App?” for me?
 It depends on your type of organization and where it
is located.
 eLearning is no longer just for the early adopters
and those who wish to be on the leading edge…
 It should be very strategic to the organization and
not just implemented ad-hoc
Strategic initiatives should adhere to
standards
These industries do:
• Manufacturing
• Healthcare
• Airline
• Financial
• Almost all others…
What is SCORM standard?
Sharable Content Object Reference Model
SCORM is a collection of standards and specifications adapted from
multiple sources to provide a comprehensive suite of e-learning
capabilities that enable interoperability, accessibility and reusability of
Web-based learning content. www.adlnet.org
 Key Benefits:
•Allows students and educators to scale, share and reuse learning content
•Makes learning content discoverable through interoperability with content
repositories
•Enables the development of adaptive learning systems that can assemble
content to meet the learner's needs "on the fly“
 Technically, it’s currently a specification that includes multiple standards
When SCORM is important?

When an organization wants to create:

•Standards based content
•Sharable content
•Reusable content AICC
IEEE
•Searchable content LTSC
•Customizable content IMS
•“Sellable” content

Content is King
 Many organizations already have existing
content from instructor led training courses
 Subject matter experts within an organization
typically already have their instructor led
training content in some sort of electronic format
 To Create or Convert?
 Content companies offer libraries of off the shelf
content
 Which is right for your organization?
Content Management System (CMS)
 Data can be defined as nearly anything:
documents, movies, pictures, phone numbers,
scientific data, and so forth.
 CMS is used for storing, controlling, revising,
semantically enriching, and publishing
documentation and contents
 CMS is backend system available only for Admin
 LMS is frontend system available for Student
Other Elements of E-learning
A complete e-Learning solution can be divided into
five components that work seamlessly together.
Although each component may be an independent
tool, together they encompass a complete e-Learning
solution.
Will e-learning replace Classrooms
 Not Completely
 Technology enabled learning has tremendous benefits
for organizations
 Traditional classroom training has components that can
not be replicated electronically
 "Teachers will never be replaced by technology - but
teachers who use technology will replace those who do
not." - B.W. Seibert
 Programs that include both classroom training and
eLearning are called “Blended Learning”
The perfect E-learning solution for you.

E-Learning Terms
E-learning Terms
• 360-degree evaluation
A process of assessing a person’s skills and knowledge through a combination
of self-evaluation and evaluation from managers, peers, et. al. Once the 360-
degree evaluation is complete, the person who has been assessed receives a
skill gap analysis detailing how they perceive themselves and how others
perceive them.

• Blended learning
Learning events or programs which combine two or more delivery strategies to
provide a more integrated and effective learning experience. A common
blended learning approach in the business skills area is to provide instruction
on basic concepts and principles via self-paced online learning modules,
followed by classroom training to provide opportunities for practicing skills in
a simulated, group context.
E-learning Terms
• Content Management System
Content Management Systems (CMS) are used to store and subsequently find
and retrieve large amounts of data. Content management systems work by
indexing text, audio clips, images, etc., within a database. In addition, CMSs
often provide version control and check-in/check out capabilities. Using robust
built-in search capabilities, users can quickly find a piece of content from
within a database by typing in keywords, the date the element was created, the
name of the author, or other search criteria.

• Learning Content Management System

A Learning Content Management System (LCMS) is an environment where
developers can create, store, reuse, manage and deliver learning content from a
central object repository, usually a database. LCMSs generally work with
content that is based on a learning object model. These systems usually have
good search capabilities, allowing developers to quickly find the text or media
needed to build training content.
