Permeable Pavements

This document summarizes permeable pavements. It defines permeable pavement as a porous surface that allows stormwater to flow through. There are different types including pervious concrete, porous asphalt, permeable pavers. The typical structure includes a permeable surface, stone reservoir layer below, and filter layer. Uses are for sites with limited space, like parking lots. Advantages include reducing runoff and filtering stormwater. Foundation aggregates must meet criteria for porosity, durability and abrasion resistance. A conceptual diagram illustrates the typical permeable pavement structure.

DEFINITION

WHAT IS A PERMEABLE PAVEMENT?

Permeable pavement surfaces are composed of either a porous
substance that allows stormwater to flow through it or nonporous
blocks that are spaced to allow water to flow between them.

3
DEFINITION

Pervious concrete, porous asphalt, permeable grid pavers, and

interlocking concrete pavers are among the permeable pavement
surfaces available. While the specific design may differ, all permeable
pavements have a common structure that includes a permeable surface
pavement layer, an underlying stone aggregate reservoir layer, and a
filter layer or cloth inserted at the bottom.

Permeable paving is ideal for:

▰ Sites with limited space for other surface stormwater BMPs
▰ Projects such as low traffic roads, parking lots, driveways,
pedestrian plazas and walkways
4
TYPES OF PERMEABLE PAVEMENTS

PERVIOUS CONCRETE
is a high-porosity concrete that is consists of cement, coarse
aggregate and water with little to no fine aggregates.

POROUS ASPHALT
The porous asphalt mixture is an open graded bituminous
asphalt mix That is made of large proportion of coarse
aggregate, small proportion of fine aggregate, mineral filler
and Petron PMB.
5
TYPES OF PERMEABLE PAVEMENTS

INTERLOCKING CONCRETE PAVERS

Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavement (PICP) comprises a
layer of solid concrete pavers separated by joints filled with
small stones.

ARTICULATED BLOCK SYSTEMS

Articulated blocks provide a hard armor surface that can be used
as an alternative to concrete, rip rap or other permanent erosion
control systems. These systems have substantially elevated
surface infiltration rates and simplified maintenance processes.

6
TYPES OF PERMEABLE PAVEMENTS

WOOD PERMEABLE PAVEMENT

Highly durable hardwoods like Black Locust are found to be an
effective permeable pavers material. Because of the
characteristics of wood, it provide a highly permeable, durable
surface that will last for decades.

PERMEABLE GRID SYSTEMS

Permeable grid systems are an alternative to traditional paving
methods. create a strong surface that can support heavy vehicles
while allowing water to permeate the surface

TYPICAL PERMEABLE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE

8
PERMEABLE PAVEMENT COMPONENTS

▰ The fundamental components of a permeable paving system

are:
▰ Pavement surface: interlocking pavers with open joints, grid
systems, precast pervious slabs or pavers, poured in
place asphalt or concrete Bedding layer as a levelling course (for
precast systems)
▰ Subsurface base storage reservoir of open graded aggregate
▰ Edge restraints

9
PERMEABLE PAVEMENT COMPONENTS

▰ Additional components may include:

▰ an underdrain system
▰ geotextile, at the discretion of design professional
▰ impermeable geomembrane on sites where soil infiltration is not
desired
▰ geo-grids for sites with heavy vehicle loading
▰ monitoring wells and clean-outs

10
USES OF PERMEABLE PAVEMENTS

This environmentally friendly technique has been shown to be used to:

▰ Reduce stormwater runoff
▰ Keep solids and pollutants out of drainage facilities
▰ Naturally filter and recharge stormwater to ground water
▰ Reduce puddle damage to pavement over time
▰ Reduce noise, improve the urban heat island effect
▰ Reduce the amount of salt needed on pavement during icy or snowy conditions, and
condense the number or area of drainage facilities to sustain a newly paved area.

11
ADVANTAGES OF PERMEABLE PAVEMENTS

Here are some of the advantages that permeable pavement has to offer:
1. Easy Installation
2. Durable
3. Sustainable
4. Low Cost
5. Can Be Temporary
6. Can Be Used for Lawn Parking
7. Can Create Temporary Roads
8. Eliminates Costly Drainage Systems
9. Can be Used for Erosion Control
12
CRITERIA OF FOUNDATION AGGREGATES

All aggregates should meet the following criteria:

▰ Porosity of 0.4
▰ Maximum wash loss of 0.5%
▰ Minimum durability index of 35
▰ Maximum abrasion of 10% for 100 revolutions and
maximum 50% for 500 revolutions

13
CRITERIA OF FOUNDATION AGGREGATES

▰ Granular Subbase Should be clear, crushed 50 mm

diameter stone, graded in accordance with ASTM
D2940. 'Rain ballast' aggregate (63 mm) would also be
suitable
▰ Granular Base Should be clear, crushed 20 mm diameter
stone conforming to ASTM C33 No 57
▰ Bedding Should be clear, crushed 5 mm diameter stone,
graded in accordance with ASTM C33 No 8, High
Performance Bedding (1-9 mm diameter), or equivalent.
Typical bedding thickness is between 40 mm and 75 mm.
