Pre-Disaster Risk
Identify what types of volcanic hazards (Lava flow,
1. volcanic gas, pyroclastic flows, and etc. are exposed
in the area, and learn about how to prepare for each.
Learn about the community’s warning system and
2. signals (sirens, text messages, etc.)
Identify local organizations that perform emergency
3. management like Red Cross and etc.
Educate each other on any disaster plans in place
4. (workplace, school or other places)
Assign responsibilities to each family member,
5. and plan to work together as a team.
Decide on locations where you will meet in case a disaster strikes:
6. Outside your home and neighborhood in case of a sudden
emergency.
Outside the city in case someone cannot return home.
Discuss what to do in an evacuation and create
7. a family evacuation plan.
8. Assemble a disaster supply kit
9. Locate safe places in the home.
Determine the best evacuation routes in the home.

Show each family member how and where to shut
11. off utilities (water, gas, electricity).
Post emergency contacts (friends, family, neighbors,
12. police, fire, etc.) on the refrigerator.
Practice your plan with your family on a regular
13. basis (every six months).
Check the disaster supply kit every three months.

Replace stored water and food every three
15. months.
Update any emergency contact info as changes
16. occur.
During Volcanic Eruption
Listen to radio or TV for updated
1. information.
Be prepared to evacuate, and do so
2. immediately if necessary
Avoid areas downwind and river valleys
3. downstream from the volcano.
Close all windows and doors, and bring
4. any pets or livestock into closed shelters.
If you are outdoors:
5. Seek shelter indoors immediately.
Avoid low-lying areas and streams.
If caught in a rock fall, roll into a ball
6. to protect your head.
Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants and if
7. necessary, along with goggles and a mask.
Post-Disaster Risk
Continue listening to radio or TV for the
1. latest information.
Remain inside the home until officials
2. declare it is safe to leave.
Inspect your home:
3. Check for damage to walls, the roof, the foundation, the
electrical system and water lines.
Notify your insurance company if your home is
damaged.
When outside, avoid volcanic ash fall.
4. Cover your skin, nose, eyes and mouth.
Clear roofs of ash fall. Ash can be very
5. heavy and cause roofs to collapse.
6. Avoid making phone calls except in
serious emergencies.
