BIOTECHNOLOGY

This document provides information on biotechnology, including its definition, history, forms, techniques, applications, and types. It defines biotechnology as the use of living organisms to develop products and processes. The document outlines two main forms: intermediate biotechnology which manipulates existing organisms, and advanced biotechnology which uses genetic engineering. Techniques discussed include using natural microorganisms or genetically modified organisms to produce products like antibiotics, hormones, enzymes, and vaccines. The types of biotechnology covered are medical, agricultural, environmental, industrial, and forensic biotechnology.

BIOTECHNOOGY

• After the completion on the lesson on Biotechnology , the students

should be able to
• 1. define biotechnology
• 2. identify the ancient technology from the modern technology
• 3. give the types of biotechnology
• 4. give the forms of biotechnology
• 5. list down the application of genetic engineering.
DEFINITION OF
BIOTECHNOLOGY
• BIOTECHNOLOGY
• The term biotechnology was first used by CKarl Ereky in 1919,a Hungarian
agricultural engineer, father of biotechnology The meaning the production of
products from raw materials with the aid of living organisms.
• It is the branch of applied science that utilizes living organisms and their
derivatives to generate products and processes, services used use to human
being
• Application of biological organisms systems or processes to manufacture desired
products
• It involves cells and their components
• It is the most important for its implication in health and medicine
FORMS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

FORMS OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
1. Intermediate Biotechnology
2. Advanced Biotechnology

1. INTERMEDIATE BIOTECHNOLOGY
• <> is the biotechnology based on manipulation of natural properties of existing
organisms for industrial processes
• <>Example of which are fermentation technology, industrial and animal plant
genetics, vaccines, natural products, biomass, industrial technology and microbial
applications to soil management. Mining and oil exploitations
• 2. ADVANCED BIOTECHNOLOGY

• <> Concerned mainly with research and development . These includes

the industrial technology of recombinant organisms and cell fusion
product, micropropagation of cells, artificial seeding, invitro plan<t
chemistry , embryo technology and immunology
<> the recombinant technology was developed during 1970, it involves
the combining of DNA from two different organisms and to generate
recombinant DNA
TECHNIQUES OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
• 1. BIOTECHNOLOGY USING NATURAL MICROORGANISMS
• <> using Lactobacillus bacteria and yeast includes manufacture of
many products like cheese , yoghurt , vinegar , wine, beer , cakes
bread
Products of Fermentation using bacteria
• 2. BIOTECHNOLOGY USING GENETICALLY ORGANISMS

• <> using genetic engineering ,specific genes can be introduced in the

organisms(GMO) called transgenic can be made to produce a
number of desired product like human insulin, vitamins and
enzymes
• Two process to create RECOMBINANT DNA TECHNOLOGY
• <> 1. CUTTING OR ISOLATING SEGMENT OF DNA or a desired gene
• 2. JOINING OR TRANSFERRING this DNA or gene with the DNA of a
different organisms with the help of enzyme DNA lipase
APPLICATION OF GENETIC
ENGINEERING
• <> A number of antibiotics such as Penicillin, tetracyclines,
streptomycin
• <> Production of hormones like insulin, transgenic microorganisms
act as mini factories to produce in huge quantities
• <> A variety of enzymes like proteases, lipases have commercial
application
• <> a number of vaccines like Hepatitis B vaccine and vaccines for
influenza, mumps, rabies and protein blood clotting been sucesgully
produced from transgenic organisms
• <> to create transgenic plants with agronomically important traits
such as disease resistance against viral, fungal and bacterial pathogen
pest resistance against insects, nematodes, as well as tolerance to
herbicides and other pesticides
• <> to produce transgenic plants that can withstand adverse
environmental conditions such as salinity, drought , chilling , heavy
temperature , heavy metal and other abiotic stresses
• <> to delay flower senescence and fruit ripening transgenic tomatoes
longer self life due to slow fruit ripening
TYPES OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

• <> MEDICAL BIOTECHNOLOGY

• <> AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
• <> ENVIRONMENTAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
• <> INDUSTRIAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
• <> FORENSIC BIOTECHNOLOGY
1. MEDICAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
involves the use of living cells to develop technologies for the improvement of
human health
2. AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
3. ENVIRONMENT BIOTECHNOLOGY
the branch of biotechnology that addresses environmental problems such as
the removal of pollution and renewable energy
BIOMARKER
