What is Reggae ?
Reggae is a term derived from rege-rege, a Jamaican
phrase meaning “ragged clothing,” it is used to
name a style of music that grew up in Jamaica.
So, Reggae is a genre of music that has its roots in
other musical styles. It incorporates influences from
Jamaican music, both traditional Mento and
contemporary Ska. Reggae became popular in
Jamaica during the 1960s.
Characteristics
Reggae shares many
characteristics with Ska,
but Ska is faster and
incorporates jazz
influences. The genre was
lauded by Jamaican youths
when the nation gained
independence in 1962.
It has a recognizable
rhythm, very typical of
African musical genres,
though uncommon in
European music, lyrics
centre on socio-political
themes.

Rastafarian movement
developed in Jamaica
and lyrics of Reggae
songs beame more
socio-political
Many of the words are
incomprehensible to
English speakers, as
they are taken from
traditional Jamaican
or refer to Rastafarian
concepts.
MARIJUANA
Cannabis is smoked as
sacrament in the
Rastafarian faith, as
they believe that
smoking allows them
to experience a
closeness to God.
This message in the
songs has harm
youths who have used
this as an excuse to
smoke drugs.

THE WORLD

The film The Harder They Come (1973) reached a global
audience and told the story of a young from Jamaica. It
had a soundtrack that consisted entirely of reggae hits,
which helped elevate Reggae music.
Of particular influence was the popular song You Can Get
It if You Really Want by Jimmy Cliff.
BOB MARLEY
Bob Marley is the world’s best known Reggae singer. Marley’s
career began in 1963 with different bands and culminated with his
album Exodus, which achieved international acclaim. Marley was
not only a Reggae singer, but a Rastafarian and a political activist.
Through his music he earned a place in Reggae fans
hearts around the world.
Raegge & the future
Reggae music has spread and developed in many different ways
around the world. Its distinctive style is the precursor to new
bands and new music rithms.
Of course, Reggae is still strong in its pure original form.
