Training design or instructional design is the
process of creating a blueprint for the
development of instruction.
Usually it meant the planning and designing the
transfer of the training contents rightly and
adequately to the recipient.
It is the process of developing training curricula
and materials to meet training and development
needs.
It determines
Whether the training is to be
conducted in a classroom,
Delivered using an electronic format
or
Using some combination of methods,
The design process sets the stage for
the development of a program that
produces results.
Viewpoint: What is the future of the training. It indicates the
significance of particular training and expected outcome.
Elements: which are factor that make training meaningful. It
depends on the nature of training. On the basis of nature the
supports, logistics are managed.
Considerations: What are the factor to be considered to
arrange the training. It includes the environment, business
nature, participant nature, organizational set up etc.
Benefits: The main advantage of doing the training. What are
the merits of the training to be considered.
Employee or Organization.
Model: Is the any specified model, pre designed model for said
training.
Phases of Training Program Design
There major phases
• Preparation or need identification phase: Gap analysis
between required job performance versus current job
performance.
• Development Phase: according to job tasks, contents,
sequence etc.
• Improvement phase: total program is evaluated to search
the scope of improvement.
Two particular matters are lies with the phase
Effectiveness of training: whether the training is achieved the
objectives and it rightly transfers the skills of job.
Efficiency of the training: cost, time, modules and other
logistics used the optimum level.
Main Elements of Training Program
Design
Need Analysis: Called the TNA. Three particular questions
are lies with. Why , whom and what purpose.
A] Learner Analysis: it analyze the trainability of learners
into following phases:
Intellectual Ability: To plan ones own learning, conceptual
and intellectual readiness to cope up with learning tasks.
Prior Knowledge or expertise in the area to be taught:
whether the trainee has prior knowledge. Example:
Training on HRM for HRM major students
Motivation to learn: willingness related to the career
growth, perception of the knowledge, difficulty, curiosity,

B] Setting Detail objective: there needs to have detailed objectives
Program objectives: Training objectives for whole training program
Session Objective: for whole training session.
Unit Objectives: Where objectives are divided into different units,
business units. Example: A Group of company may have different
types of business units.
C] Designing Training Curricula: The curricula of the training are
designed on the basis of job, business nature, level and positions
D] Selection of Training and Development Methods: It is a must to
adopt. Following are the guidelines factors
Human Factors: The intellectual ability, prior experience, knowledge
Program Objective: required changes to effected in knowledge,
attitudes, and skills. The bigger objectives of the program
Subject areas: disciplines ie HRM, Marketing has own specific features.

E] Selection of Training and Development media
The next stage after methods is selecting appropriate media in optimum
cost and efficient manner. This include Video, computer based, CD,
movable disk, short movie etc. Some factors of selecting media are.
Changes in Contents: content may be changes prior to select the media.
Cost and convenience: there may be wider scope of recipient. So this
should plan whether the employee should be at one point.
Number of Managers: How many managers
Company conditions: the work condition day or night or sequences of
work
Company preferences: it is preferred to have readily available media.
Fear of attending courses: individual limitation on any methods or
courses may affect.
Main Elements of Training Program
Design
F] Evaluation: Continues efforts for monitoring the training
design
It include four level of evaluation.
• Reaction level: immediate reaction. What and how the
participant feel.
• Learning Level: Measured against the set outcomes. How
much progress seen.
• Job behavior: changes in job behaviors after the training.
• Functional level: changes in overall functions performance
after the training received. The overall dept. performance.
Program logistics
A] Planning: includes program checklist. Design, staff, budget,
cost, time frame, location, accommodation, hotels, etc.
B] Budgeting: should include in company budget or HR
Budget. Includes; salary, cost of equipment's, consultants,
meeting rooms, venue, refreshment, advertisement, power
supply, technological supports cost, books etc.
C] Timing: 1] availability of trainees-after financial period, after
any holidays program, beginning of financial period etc. 2]
Availability of trainers and facilities-Outside trainers,
consultants, outdoor locations, stay. 3] Lead time for
programme- A minimum time required before finally execute.
Program logistics
D] Staffing: staff members, outside consultant, guest
speakers, administrative, supports staff.
E] Facilities: Meeting room, seminar dates, Transport,
seminar room, size, support services [food sleeping],
aesthatic image,
F] Programme promotion and marketing: Brochures, Direct
email, newsletter, personal contacts, leaflets, posters,
magazine, advertisement, television, radio advertising.
Example of Checklist:
( Please see the checklist from the Book Joesph C.
We will brainstorm in class)
Program logistics
G] Prepare participant
evaluation form(s): It contain the
feedback of participants on
training methods, delivery,
resources person, and overall
impression.
H] Training Handouts: It is
called headnote to be carried
and given to the trainees. It
consist the brief detail of the
content of the training. The
handout contains the
descriptive and technical and
overall issues related with
training. It is easy and friendly
to carry the key matters, topic
and subjects of training.
Program logistics
I] Training certificate: It confirms
the participant and help in future
references. It is used as record of
participation date, venue and the
organizer
• Issued by the organizer
• The format has to be designed
before
• Provided to all participants
• Used to expose the Organizer too
• Must be signed by the key person
such as Head of HR, CEO,
Resources person.
Training Course Curriculum
• Factor to be considered
• Need of organization: What kind of business, market
strength.
• Job nature: job nature of the employee
• Nature of Business: Industry nature. Different in same group
• Areas of Learning:
• Budget of the organizations:
• Instrument and tools required:
Training of the Trainers (ToT or TTT)
Provide training to those who will be train others. It usually happens to the
representative of the group or the organizations. Training of Trainers (TOT) is a
high-level professional learning process for qualified trainers who will be
providing training to individual or groups for implementation of any specific
objective.
• The Training of Trainers (ToT) model is intended to engage master trainers in
coaching new trainers that are less experienced with a particular topic or skill,
or with training overall.
• A ToT workshop can build a pool of competent instructors who can then teach
the material to other people. Instead of having just one trainer who teaches a
course for a long time, there are multiple trainers teaching the same course at
the same time in the ToT model.
• By this a new participant typically gets to watch an experienced trainer teach,
complete the exercises, and then practice teaching segments to other
participants.
