Understanding Static Electricity Basics

Static electricity is an imbalance of electric charges on the surface of an insulator. It is produced when two surfaces contact and separate, causing electrons to transfer. It differs from current electricity where electrons are in motion. Factors like synthetic clothes, dry air, and rubber shoes can produce static buildup. This leads to a risk of static discharge sparks in hazardous environments like gas stations. Preventing static involves wearing natural fibers, being grounded, and increasing humidity.

 What is Static Electricity?

• Static electricity refers to an imbalance between

the electric charges in a body, specifically the

imbalance between the negative and the positive charges

on Surface of a body.

 How it is different from Electricity?

• In current electricity the electrons are in state

of motion inside the conductor…

• In Static electricity the charges are at rest

and they are accumulated on the surface of

the insulator…

 How Static Electricity is produced in Insulators?

• A static electric charge can be created whenever two
surfaces contact and or slide against each other and then
separated…
• Synthetic clothes, Rubber sole shoes, Drier air (less
humid) helps in formation of Static electricity

Which atmosphere favours Static Electricity

formation?
• During winter, the weather gets colder
and the air becomes drier. Drier air
becomes more conductive than humid
air. So we observe more static
electricity in winter than in summer.

• Relative humidity must be below 50% in

order for a static charge to be produced.

How to Prevent Static

Electricity?
• Wearing low-static shoes – Leather sole
shoes
• Wearing Natural fiber clothes – Cotton
clothes
• Keeping any metal object with us &
Touching it before touching any other
metal.
• Spraying Anti-static chemical on
carpets, laptops and other daily used
grounded items.
• Using a Humidifier

• Using proper PPE kits in Hazardous

environments.
