Bus Math 5 Mark On Mark Up and Mark Down

This document defines and provides examples for mark-on, mark-up, and mark-down calculations that are important concepts in business mathematics. It begins by differentiating the three terms and then provides two examples for each calculation type. Mark-up involves increasing the selling price above the cost price by a certain percentage. Mark-down decreases the selling price to stimulate slow sales. Mark-on is a temporary increase in price to take advantage of high demand periods. The examples demonstrate how to calculate the unknown values like selling price, cost price, or percentage given the other known figures.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the learning episode, you are expected to:
a.)
Differentiate Mark-on, Mark down and Mark-up.
(ABM_BM11BS-Ig-1)
b.)
Obtain Mark-on, Mark-down, and Mark-up given price of
a product.
Business Mathematics
Selling Price
is the amount at which the product is to be sold.

Cost Price
is the total cost involved in a selling product purchase
price (fixed cost) and all other expenses (variable cost) that
are incurred before the product is sold.
Business Mathematics
Mark-up
is the difference between the selling price and the cost
price. It is computed based on the mark-up percentage.

Mark-up Amount = Selling Price – Cost Price

or
Mark-up Amount = Mark-up % x Cost Price
Business Mathematics
Mark-up Percentage
is the percentage of the cost price that the company
wanted to add to determine the selling price of the product.

Mark-up Amount % =

Mark-on
is a temporary mark-up on certain products to take advantage
of the high demand during peak sales like the weeks prior to
Christmas, opening of classes, Valentine’s day, graduation month,
etc.
Mark-on is used to temporarily maximized earnings and the
price is usually returned to its original selling price when the demand
for the product is on a normal level.
Mark-on Amount = New Selling Price – Current Selling Price or
Mark-on Amount = Mark-on% x Current Selling Price
Business Mathematics
Examples:
1.)
A fast-selling item in department store is currently being
sold for Php 675.35. Because of high demand for the item,
the store decided to apply a mark-on percentage of 22%. Find
the new selling price.

Mark-down
is a reduction in the selling price of the merchandise. The cause
of a markdown may be to stimulate the sale of the slow-moving
products. Some may use mark-down to drive competitors out of
business.
Mark-down Amount = Current Selling Price – New Selling Price
or
Mark-down Amount = Mark-down% x Current Selling Price
