5
Learning Target
In this lesson, the learners will describe how heat application or
removal can physically change objects into a different form (focus on
solid to liquid, liquid to solid, and liquid to gas, i.e., water).
6
Let’s Learn
7
Objects can exist in different forms.
ice cube water steam or vapor
solid liquid gas
8
Objects can exist in different forms.
Solid objects have an
exact shape.
ice cube
9
Objects can exist in different forms.
Liquid objects can flow and
follow the shape of their
container.
water
10
Objects can exist in different forms.
Gases do not have a shape of
their own. They are usually
not seen.
steam
11
How can an ice cube turn into water?
12
When heat is added to a solid, it turns into liquid.
This is called melting.
solid heat liquid
13
How does water turn into ice?
14
When heat is removed from a liquid, it turns into solid.
This is called freezing.
liquid heat solid
15
To remove heat, the object is placed in a
cold environment.
refrigerator
16
What if we add heat to water?
heat liquid
17
When heat is added to a liquid, it turns into gas.
This is called boiling.
liquid heat gas
18
Water can exist in different forms.

Let’s Do It
20
Identify if the object is solid, liquid, or gas.
chocolate bar
21
Identify if the object is solid, liquid, or gas.
juice drink
22
Identify if the object is solid, liquid, or gas.
ice pop
23
Identify if the object is solid, liquid, or gas.
candle
24
Identify if the object is solid, liquid, or gas.
soup with steam rising

Let’s Connect
32
What do you think will
happen if water vapor cooled
down?
33
Big Idea
Objects can exist in three different forms: solid,
liquid, and gas. The physical form of an object
changes when heat is applied to it or removed.
34
Remember
● Liquids turn into gases when heat
is added to them by boiling.
● Solids turn into liquids when heat
is applied to them by melting.
● Liquids turn into solids when placed in very
cold temperature by freezing.
