DIGESTIVE

SYSTEM
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students should be
able to;
a. Identify the structures of the digestive system ;
b. Demonstrate an understanding of digestive system
function; and
c. Draw an analysis of the path of the food as it is
digested.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
• The digestive system breaks down food into simple
nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
These can then be absorbed into your blood, so your
body can use them for energy, growth and repair.
Anything that isn't used is waste, and leaves the body
as feces (poo).
DIGESTION
• It is the process of mechanically and chemically
breaking down food into substances for
absorption into the bloodstream. The food
contains three macronutrients that require
digestion before they can be absorbed: fats,
carbohydrates, and proteins.
PHASES OF DIGESTION
1. INGESTION
2. MOVEMENT
3. MECHANICAL AND CHEMICAL DIGESTION
4. ABSORPTION
5. ELIMINATION
TYPES OF DIGESTION
1. MECHANICAL DIGESTION
• Mechanical digestion involves physically breaking down food
substances into smaller particles to more efficiently undergo
chemical digestion.
2. CHEMICAL DIGESTION
The role of chemical digestion is to further degrade the molecular
structure of the ingested compounds by digestive enzymes into a
form that is absorbable into the bloodstream.
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the students shoulb be
able to;
a) Identify the structures of the digestive system
b) Demonstrate an understanding of digestive
system fucntions; and
c) Present an analysis of the path of the food as
is digested.
GROUP ACTIVITY: BRAINSTORMING
• Direction: Each group are going t choose
one envelop then identify the specific
picture and disuss it’s function in five
minutes.
THE MOUTH
The mouth contains the following
structures:
• Teeth which breaksdown the
food into samller pieces.
• Tounge a mascular organ that
mie the food with saliva aids
with swallowing.
• The duct of salivary glands that
secretes saliva that lubricate
the food and palate that forms
the rooting of the mouth.
PHARYNX

The pharynx is 5 to 6
inches long. during
swallowing,the epiglotis
raises which prevents
the bolus of the food
from entering in the
trachea.
ESOPHAGUS
During swallowing, the
bolus is conveyed by the
esophagus into the stomach
via wavelike contraction
and relaatio of involuntary
muscle that is called
pristalsis.
STOMACH
the stomach holds the food and
mixes it with acid and enzymes
that continue to break the food
down into a liquid or paste.
