TOOLS
DRAWING PENCIL
a writing utensil with
a graphite lead
embedded in a
wooden shaft. It
is mainly used for
artistic sketching
and drawing
MECHANICAL PENCIL
is a particular type of pencil
used by architects, drafting
technicians, and designers
for precision technical
drawing. They have a long
slim lead sleeve/guide pipe to
aid in marking straight lines
with rulers and stencils
ERASING SHIELD
They are designed to allow
erasers to be used through
them to erase lines and text
without removing lines close
by which do not need to be
erased. The Shield also keeps
the paper flat and prevents it
from buckling when erasing.
PROTRACTOR
a device used in drafting and
drawing: it's mainly used
for drawing and measuring
angles.
TRIANGULAR SCALE
A triangular scale is a ruler
that has a 3-lobed cross-
section with 6 different types
of scales on the edges (2 on
each face) used for measuring
and preparing scale drawings
such as blueprints and maps.
It is also called an architect's scale.
FRENCH CURVE
are plastic (or wooden)
templates having an edge
composed of several different
curves. French curves are
used in drafting (or were
before computer-aided
design) to draw smooth
curves of almost any desired
curvature in mechanical
drawings.
PENCIL SHARPENER
is a tool for sharpening a
pencil's writing point by
shaving away its worn surface
COMPASS
a drawing tool that can be
used to draw circles or arcs
DUSTING BRUSH
feature wooden handles for
the easy removal of eraser
shavings, dust and dirt from
drawings and/or drafting
surfaces without smudging
TECHNICAL PEN
is a specialized instrument
used by an engineer,
architect, or drafter to make
lines of constant width for
architectural, engineering, or
technical drawings
TEMPLATE
Drafting templates are
stencils that allows you to
draw specific symbols and
shapes that
you use repeatedly in a
design.
LEROY LETTERING PEN
permits the user to trace
letters and numerals
from templates on to the
surface
TAPE RULE/PUSH RULE
is a measuring tape that coils
into a compact case. It is used
for measuring long, short,
straight lengths
MATERIALS
T-SQUARE
a technical drawing
instrument used by
draftsmen primarily as a
guide for drawing
horizontal lines on a
drafting table
PARALLEL RULE
help draftsmen, surveyors,
cartographers, architects, and
navigators draw accurate
parallel lines. The instrument
comes in two main forms: two
rectangular straight edges
connected by brass or silver
hinges, or a single frame
surrounding a roller.
TRIANGLE
a drafting tool used to
draw accurate parallel
lines, vertical lines, and
other angled lines
DRAWING/TRACING PAPER
is made specifically
for making technical
drawings. It has a number
of unique features that
make it useful for
architects, engineers, or
anyone else who needs to
make technical drawings.
DRAFTING TAPE
looks similar to ordinary
household masking tape, but
has a lower tack. It is
intended to hold blueprints
to a drawing board or light
table, and to pull off easily
without damaging the
drawing
ERASER
The eraser is used to remove
preliminary or unwanted lines
SANDPAPER
BLOCK
A sandpaper block is a small
wooden paddle with strips of
sandpaper stapled to one
side. It is used to sharpen
pencils, charcoal or pastels,
or to clean drawing tools, and
can be an essential item for an
experienced or developing
artist.
EQUIPMENT
DRAWING/DRAFTING TABLE
Drawing tables may be used for
various tasks,
including reading oversized
papers and sketches and
drafting detailed drawings. In
general, drafting tables are
intended for use by architects,
designers, and engineers. They
are also appropriate for
students in architecture,
engineering, and the arts.
DRAWING STOOL
Drafting stools are designed
specifically for architects,
engineers, laboratory workers,
draftsmen, and others who
need durable chairs, resistant
to wear and staining.
