• Continent is a massive area of land that is separated from
others by oceans or other natural features.
• There are 7 continents on Earth and together they cover one
third of the world with the oceans covering the other two
third.
• 5 of the 7 continents are joined by land to another continent,
while Antarctica and Australia/Oceania are separated from
the others by oceans.
• Each continent has a wide range of different landscapes,
weather, animal and plant life.
ASIA
• Asia is the largest continent of
our planet, both in size and also
when we consider the
population. The continent is
located mainly in the Northern
Hemisphere.
• There are 48 countries in Asia.
• More than 4.6 billion people
live on the continent. Asia is
the most populous continent.
EUROPE
• Europe is the second smallest
continent in size but the third
largest in population. The
European continent is
located completely in the
Northern Hemisphere.
• The European continent
houses 44 countries.
AFRICA
• Africa is the second largest
continent. The African
continent is located in both
the Northern and Southern
Hemispheres.
• There are 54 countries in
Africa with a total of more
than 1.3 billion people living
on the continent, which is
15% of the world's total
population.
NORTH AMERICA
• North America is the third
largest continent in size and
the fourth largest when we
consider population. The
continent is located in the
Northern Hemisphere.
• The North American continent
houses 23 countries with a
total of more than 368 million
people living on the continent.
SOUTH AMERICA
• South America is the fourth
largest continent in size and the
fifth largest when we consider
population. The continent is
located mainly in the Southern
Hemisphere.
• There are 14 countries in South
America with a total of more
than 429 million people living
on the continent.

the landmass. Australia which is part of Oceania is often
referred to as the continent, but we use Oceania/Australia
to include also the islands surrounding Australia.
• The largest island of Oceania is Australia.
• Oceania includes 14 countries, some of them are: Australia,
Micronesia, Fiji, Marshall Islands, New Zealand, Solomon
Islands, ect.
ANTARCTICA

planet. The continent is almost double the size of Australia!
• Antarctica is an ice covered continent surrounded by the Southern
Ocean. Almost all of the continent's land is covered by a thick layer
of ice.
• Antarctica is the driest one of the seven continents. Antarctica is an
icy desert with very little rainfall throughout the year.
• Antarctica is the least populated continent. There are no residents
living permanently there. Only around 1,000 people (in winter) and
10,000 people (in summer) live on the continent. These people are
mainly based there for one year to live and work in the research
stations.
