Objectives

• Discuss what is sinawali

• To know different sinawli styles
• Demonstrate the basic striking in Sinawali.
What is Sinawali?

• The term "Sinawali"refers to the activity of 'weaving', and

is applied to the art of Philippine martial art Eskrima, with
reference to a set of two-person, two-weapon exercises.
• Sinawali exercise provides Eskrima practitioners with
basic skills and motions relevant to a mode of two-
weapon blocking and response method called Doblete.

• Sinawali training is often introduced to novices in
order to develop certain fundamental skills including:
body positioning and distance relative to an
opponent, rotation of the body and the proper
taming radius, recognition of one's center of
gravity, eye-hand coordination, target perception
and recognition, increased ambidexterity, recognition
and performance of rhythmic structures for upper body
movement, and muscular developments important to
the art, especially, the wrist and forearm regions.
• The complex patterns interweave with coordinated grace
that is meant to coordinate a continuous form of strikes,
shields, redirections and deflective combat moves
• There are three basic types of sinawali in Arnis:
the single sinawali, the double sinawali and
the reverse sinawali.
• Sinawali, one must develop his timing, speed,
agility, power, and harmony. The Sinawali
enhances the footwork, reflexes and body
movements which are necessary for the training.
Double Stick Drills
What is Double Stick Training?
• Double Baston is a common name for a set of
techniques and styles involving two sticks these
drills can be done solo or with a partner, and are
common to many styles. The name Sinawali
came from the Tagalog word “Sawali”, a woven
split bamboo mats used as walls of nipa huts, and
literally means “weaving”. The crisscrossing
movements of Sinawali weapons fighting mimic
the pattern of these mats hence the name.
• The high-speed nature of Sinawali drills is good for
developing fast reaction. The rapid-fire contact of
sticks in these drills will sharpen one’s awareness of
motion. Developing the strength and coordination
of both hands is another benefit of Sinawali training.
Most of these drills teach the practitioner to relate
the movement of the weak hand to that of the strong
hand hence promoting ambidexterity.
• Ambidexterity- ability to use both hands equally
well.
• Also referred to Double sticks, Doble Olisi,
Dalawang Sandata ( 2 weapons), it simulates a
system of 2 weapons of equal length. Training with
double weapons develops ambidexterity and
coordination between the 2 limbs.
• We have a stronger limb and a weaker limb, being ambi-
dexter means that your weaker hand can do what the
stronger hand can do. This can be developed through
proper training and coordination exercises and drills.
• Two weapon of same length combinations that could
be:
• A. 2 sticks, usually a pair of rattan, a pair of bahi, a
pair of kamagong (iron wood)
• B. 2 swords, usually a pair of sword of the same type
such as parang, bolo, ginunting, barong, etc...
• C. 2 knife, usually a pair of dagger such as kutsilyo
(knife), Daga (dagger), balisong (butterfly knife).
• Some common reasons why training with double weapons
are advantageous:

• A. Fighting with double weapon is often more flowing and

continuous as both hands are use for strike, blocks and
counters
• B. If only one weapon is used, you can change from one
hand to the another which is a good strategy.
• C. in Combat scenarios, you can change hand or side when
your other hand is tired.
