KNOWLEDGE
• Indigenous knowledge (IK) is the local
knowledge – knowledge that is unique to a
given culture or society. IK contrasts with the
international knowledge system generated by
universities, research institutions and private
firms. (Warren 1991)

• …owned, controlled and managed by indigenous peoples in
order for them to develop and produce culturally
appropriate information in the languages understood by the
community by utilizing indigenous materials and resources,
reflecting community needs and interests, visions and
aspirations, and independent from vested interest groups.

1. Divide the class into groups
with 8-10 members.
2. Each group will interview two
elders coming from three (3)
families.

3. Encode the information on a short bond paper and
identify the source of information.
4. Students will interview 10 classmates and find out if
these cultural beliefs or practices are still known and
being valued by their generation.
(Example: Pagmamano – still practicing up to today
rate: 10 out of 10…)
5. Present the data you gathered with pictures as a
form of evidence through a powerpoint presentation.
Interview
QUESTIONS:
1. Ask the name of the interviewee, age and address.
2. What is their tribe/religion?
3. What are their cultural beliefs or practices in the
community valued by the elders? State 5 of their cultural
beliefs or practices.
4. Is there any beliefs or practices that’s not in practice
anymore? What are these and why?
5. Is there any beliefs or practices that’s still in practice up
to present time? What are those?
For the students: Identify the source of information.
