English Acads

Power point
Ashley Pedrigal
Academic language
Academic language includes language used in
textbooks, in classrooms, on tests, and in each
discipline. It is different in vocabulary and structure
from the everyday spoken English of social
interactions. Academic language is the language
needed by students to do the work in schools. It
includes, for example, discipline-specific vocabulary,
grammar and punctuation, and applications of
rhetorical conventions and devices that are typical for a
content area (e.g., essays, lab reports, discussions of a
controversial issue.)
Text structure
Text structures refer to the way authors organize
information in text. Recognizing the underlying structure
of texts can help students focus attention on key
concepts and relationships, anticipate what is to come,
and monitor their comprehension as they read.

Some common ones are: compare and contrast,

problem and solution, chronological, cause and effect,
descriptive, and process.
Summarizing
Summarizing means rewriting something in your own words
but shortening it by stating only the main idea and the
supporting points you need for your purposes.
Read the text.
Example of summarizing:
- Break it down into sections.
- Identify the key points in each section.
- Write the summary.
- Check the summary against the article.
Outlining
An outline, also called a hierarchical outline, is a list
arranged to show hierarchical relationships and is a type
of tree structure. An outline is used to present the main
points or topics of a given subject. Each item in an outline
may be divided into additional sub-items.
Critical approaches
Critical approach is used to analyze, question, interpret,
synthesize and evaluate literary works, with a specific
mindset or “lenses”.

Here are seven critical approaches that will enable you to

delve deeply into literature.
(1) The Historical / Biographical Approach.
(2) The Moral / Philosophical Approach.
(3) Formalism / New Criticism.
(4) Psychological Criticism.
(5) The Mythological / Archetypal / Symbolic Critical
Approach.
(6) The Feminist Approach.
Concept Paper
concept paper is a preliminary document that sets out to
explain what a proposed study is about, why it is being
undertaken, and how it will be carried out. It scrutinizes a
concept or idea and provides an overview of the project a
researcher wants to embark on.
