I. Hem- the edge of the garment
that is finished.

Types of Hem Finish


1. Double-folded hem.
The raw edges folded under the
seam. This is a very versatile
hem. Can be any width and
might be used on majority of
fabrics and with most designs.
2. Serge and sew.
The raw edge is overlocked
before stitching, it eliminates the
need to fold the edge twice
making the hem of the garment
less bulky. Three-thread
overlocking and can be wide or
narrow depending on the
thickness of your fabric
3. Blind stitch hem aka
invisible hemming.

Have tiny dots because of the


thread. Must use matching color
of thread in stitching to make it
invisible on the side.
•4. Lettuce edge aka rolled hem.
•Applicable for thinner fabric.
•5.Bias binding

5. Bias cut can be shaped and is


good for curved edges. You can
used contrast color of fabric
when the purpose is for
decorative
6. Curved hem
Pinch the excess fabric to keep
the hem even. You can apply
basting stitch before hemming.
7. Scalloped hem
To hem the scalloped edges, you
will need a facing matching the
garment in shape and the grain
orientation.
8. Lace-trimmed hem.
Finished using lace at the hem of
the skirt.
II. Belt-is a strip of material worn around the waist to
support clothes or for decorations. This serves as an
accessory that adds beauty as a finishing touch to the
garment. The belt can have an interfacing to make it firm
and more structured. It needs belt loops to support and
prevent it from dropping.
III. Fasteners are the used to close and open garments.
Examples are zippers,
A.Buttons as a fastener is made by passing it through a
buttonhole or loop.

TYPES OF BUTTONS

1.Flat Buttons
•These lie flat against the
fabric and generally have
two or four holes in the
center that the needle and
thread are passed through.
Shank buttons have a

back through which thread
is sewn to attach
the button. Button
shanks may be a separate
piece added to the back of
a button.
•SNAP BUTTONS

• 3. Snap buttons have a pin


which is used to pierce the
fabric and is ‘pushed’ into

and securing the two
pieces together.

used in the tops of skirts to

garment piece.
• C. Buckle fastenings are
found nowadays on belts,
bags, coats, and as more
contemporary fastenings
on other fashion items.
• D.ZIPPERS-a fastener
consisting of two rows of
metal or plastic teeth on
strips of tape and a sliding
piece that closes an
opening by drawing the
teeth together
