NARRATIVE
CHAPTER IV
Objectives
At the end of this chapter, the students should be able
to:
• narrate effectively
• use the order of arrangement to make the story
understandable
NARRATION
Narration is telling a story.
It presents an event or sequence of actions which has
taken place over a period of time.
The purpose of a narrative paper is to recreate an
experience in such a way that you can imaginatively
participate in it.

NARRATION
In choosing a story to tell, select the one that is
significant.
The following questions may serve as guide:
1. Why is this experience important to you?
2. What did you learn from this experience?
3. Do you think this experience is significant to
the reader too?
4. Why do you want to tell this story? (This is your
purpose)
NARRATION
There are important points you should
remember in writing a narrative account.
NARRATION
1. Specific Details
A narrative which recreates an experience to the
reader should contain specific details. These details
give life to the story.
Example:
My breakfast consisted of six ounces of freshly
squeezed orange juice, two soft scrambled eggs, three
strips of lean, crisp bacon, an English muffin laden
with butter and topped with homemade strawberry
jam, and two cups of coffee with heavy cream.
NARRATION
2. Language that Sounds Natural
• The language should sound conversational.
• Imagine that you are telling the story and your
reader is right in front of you.
• Use a simple and specific description allowing the
reader to participate vicariously in your experience.
NARRATION
I didn't know what to do when he looked at me, I
closed my eyes, but I could feel my lips quivering, and
my tongue, seemed stiff. I could hear my teeth
chattering.
• Instead of just writing "I was nervous," specific
details let the reader see how nervous the writer (or
the character in the narration) is.
NARRATION
The little girl said nothing. She unbuttoned her coat and folded it
across her lap. Her dress underneath was prim and dark blue. A gold chain
dangled about her neck, and her fingers, sensitive and musical-looking
toyed with it. Examining her more attentively, Mrs. Miller decided the truly
distinctive feature was not her hair, but her eyes; they were hazel, steady,
lacking any child-like quality whatsoever and, because of their size, seem to
consume her small face.
Mrs. Miller offered a peppermint. "What's your name dear?"
"Miriam," she said, as though, in some curious way, it were
information already familiar.
"Why, isn't that funny -my name's Miriam, too. And it's not terribly
common name either, now, don't tell me your last name's Miller!"
"Just Miriam."
"But isn't that funny?"
"Moderately," said Miriam, and rolled the peppermint on her tongue.
NARRATION
3. Direct Quotation or Dialogue
Direct quotation or dialogue allows the characters to
express their ideas. It also reflects the mood and the attitude
of the characters in the story, hence, letting the reader know
them better.
NARRATION
4. Order
The story or narrative should contain three
parts: the beginning, the body, and the ending.
The beginning gives the background that leads to the
experience being narrated.
NARRATION
The Body of the Narrative
• The body of the narrative is arranged in the chronological
order of the events.
• You want your readers to share the events as you
experienced them.
• You should let your readers know by means of transitions
what the chronology is. Examples
Transitions that are:
of the transitions indicates the passage
of time essential to a narrative.
then, next, before, after, soon, later, the next day, a month later,
after a month, the next morning, finally, in the end, etc.
NARRATION
One day, a man came to town in a donkey and began loafing around
in the public library where I used to spend most of the time in those days.
He was a tall young Indian of the Ojibwa tribe. He had escaped from an
asylum.
Six days after he arrived in town, his animal was struck by the
Tulare street trolley and seriously injured. The following day, the animal
passed away, most likely of internal injuries. The animal sank to the
pavement, fell on the Indian's leg, groaned, and died. When the Indian got
his leg free, he got up and limped into the drugstore on the corner and
made a long-distance call. He telephoned his brother in Oklahoma. The call
cost him a lot of money, which he dropped into a slot as requested by the
operator as if he were in the habit of making such calls every day.

5. The Narrative Ending
The ending of the narrative may state its significance or
a lesson learned. Read the example of an ending which states
what the writer had arrived at:
At last I admitted to myself that the raccoons had won. I
was tired of getting up in the middle of the night to gather the
garbage they scattered about the backyard. I was tired of
trying to find a garbage can that they could not open. I was, in
fact, tired of the country. As I crept wearily back to my
bedroom, I knew the raccoon had taught me a valuable lesson:
I did not belong in the country; I belonged in a high-rise
apartment in the heart of the city. And that's just where I
