CHAPTER 1:
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background of the Study

A. Trends and Updates

-overview of the current state of the topic

B. Issues and Problems

-specific gaps that exist within the topic

C. Objectives and Purpose

-what the research intends to achieve
Sample Trends/Updates from the research “Relationship
Among Body Image, Self-esteem and Academic Performance of
With the rising popularity of body image
Grade 11 HUMSS Students of PLMar-SHS”
and self-esteem
awareness, the concept of body positivity emerges. West
(2022) claims that the body positivity movement started
on Instagram in 2012. Instagram's growing user base in the
Philippines and throughout the world means that the social
media site is being used to promote movements and trends
like body positivity, which encourage healthy lifestyle
(Cortez et al 2020). Body positivity is now extremely
popular, with a total of 13 million social media posts in
2020. Additionally, Cohen (2019) suggests that body
positivity challenges unrealistic standards of appearance
that the society created it as a movement that places more
emphasis on the functionality of the body than its
appearance. It is a growing social media movement that
aims to go against unrealistic standards and encourage
acceptance and appreciation of all bodies and types.
Sample Issues/Problems from the research “Relationship
Among Body Image, Self-esteem and Academic Performance of
Grade 11 HUMSS Students of PLMar-SHS”

The movement has been criticized for promoting unhealthy standards and
spreading
information that may be negative to a person's health (Haye, 2019).
According to De Cadenet (2018), renowned for featuring models or
celebrities, he received a number of backlashes for showcasing Tess
Holliday, a plus sized model. In the issue, Holliday discussed her self-love
journey and expressed frustration over mean comments on her social
media. Many thought the magazine should pull the issue because it
seemed to criticize health (Callahan, 2018).
Sample Issues/Problems from the research “Relationship
Among Body Image, Self-esteem and Academic Performance of
Grade 11 HUMSS Students of PLMar-SHS”

In the Philippines, the media often prioritize having a thin and tall stature,
having long hair, having light/tanned skin, a small/pointy nose, or simply,
the Western beauty standard as markers of attractiveness, which also
dates back to the country's colonial past (Humanist Alliance Philippines,
International, 2023). These beauty standards are notably irrational
(Raaziya, 2023) and the thirst for attuning to the standards is a never-
ending process. When someone feels bad about their looks, it can really
affect their life. Feeling unhappy with how one looks can make an
individual feel less good overall and lower their well-being.
Sample Objectives/Purpose from the research “Relationship
Among Body Image, Self-esteem and Academic Performance of
Grade 11 HUMSS Students of PLMar-SHS”
Therefore, this study will aim to explore body image and self-esteem in
relation to the academic performance of randomly selected Grade 11
Humanities and Social Sciences students of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng
Marikina. Specifically, researchers will aim to assess whether academic
performance positively or negatively relates to body image and self-
esteem. Understanding these relationships can also help identify such
factors that contribute to students' various academic outcomes.
Furthermore, the relationship will not only be seen, but also, this study
will aim to provide recommendations based on the results of the data
collection.
1.2. Statement of the Problem

A. Problem Statement
-description of the issue that needs to be addressed
Sample Problem Statement from the research “Relationship
Among Body Image, Self-esteem and Academic Performance of
Grade 11 HUMSS Students of PLMar-SHS”

The relationship between body image, self-esteem, and academic

performance has gained significant attention in educational
psychology due to its implications for student well-being and
success. Body image, or how individuals perceive their physical
appearance, can greatly affect a student's confidence and overall self-
esteem. In turn, self-esteem, which refers to one’s general sense of worth
and value, is often linked to various life outcomes, including academic
performance. Students who perceive themselves negatively may face
challenges in concentrating, participating in class, or performing to their
full potential academically.
Sample Problem Statement from the research “Relationship
Among Body Image, Self-esteem and Academic Performance of
Grade 11 HUMSS Students of PLMar-SHS”

In the context of high school students, these factors may intersect in

unique ways. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to issues
surrounding body image due to physical and emotional changes during
puberty, social comparison, and the influence of media. The impact of
body image on self-esteem may either directly or indirectly influence their
academic performance. Understanding this relationship can help
educators, school counselors, and parents provide better support to
students, enhancing both their academic outcomes and personal well-
being.
Sample Problem Statement from the research “Relationship
Among Body Image, Self-esteem and Academic Performance of
Grade 11 HUMSS Students of PLMar-SHS”

This study aims to explore the relationship between body image, self-
esteem, and academic performance among high school students in order
to provide insights that may lead to improved support systems and
intervention strategies for struggling students.
