GAP

ANALYSIS
WHAT IS GAP IN LEARNING?
 The difference between what a student is expected to have
learned by a certain grade level versus what they
have actually learned up to that point.

 The difference between “the way things are” and “the way they
should be”.

 A learner’s deficiency or shortcoming, which if eliminated results

in improvements in knowledge, competence and/or performance
that can potentially improve outcomes.
ACTIVITY
 "When you are constructing something and you put the first
brick wrong, the whole construction will be faulty."
WHY GAP ANALYSIS IS
IMPORTANT?
 Learning is based on building blocks

 Learning that is achieved at one grade level serves as the foundation on which

the understanding of more complex ideas and concepts is built.

 Learning structure grows throughout a student's academic career, with new

skills developing from the skills the student has already mastered.

 Not every student learns at the same pace, though – which is why what starts

out as a small learning gap can eventually become a more serious problem.

 Address gaps early on

OUR EXPERIENCE
 Everyone who teaches has had this experience: you are clear

about learning outcomes , make lesson plans and design

fantastic activities to help students get there, but despite all
your planning, students aren’t able to achieve the learning
outcomes.
MIND THE GAP
SIX LEARNING GAPS
 In “Design for How People Learn”, Julie Dirksen describes six types of
potential learning gaps
 Knowledge gap
 Learning gaps
 Skill gaps
 Motivational gap
 Environmental gap
 Communication gap
 Change gap
PANDEMIC LEARNING LOSS
 Asking the right questions helps you analyze and organize information. When

determining learning gaps, ask yourself, your team, and students’ previous
teachers the following questions throughout the process:

Which students need additional assistance?

What standards were not covered last year (especially after switching to

distance learning)?

What knowledge and skills can students build on to succeed moving

forward?

What additional professional development is needed for students and
