INTRODUCTION
Study focuses on the influence of perceived academic stress on the mental health of senior high school
students at Matanao National High School. It highlights how academic stress—caused by workload,
parental expectations, and social pressures—negatively impacts students' emotional, psychological,
and social well-being, leading to anxiety, depression, and decreased academic performance. The
research aims to address this issue by examining the relationship between academic stress and
mental health, particularly in a local context where such studies are limited. The findings aim to help
educators, policymakers, and mental health professionals develop interventions to support students'
well-being.
This study is the lack of research specifically focusing on the experiences of senior high school
students in Matanao Davao del Sur regarding the impact of academic stress on their mental health.
While numerous studies have explored academic stress and mental health at the international and
national levels, most of these studies are conducted in urban settings or broader contexts, leaving a
gap in understanding how these stressors affect students in rural areas like Matanao. Additionally,
there is limited exploration of how local educational systems, cultural factors, and community support
structures influence academic stress and mental health outcomes.
RATIONALE
This study explains the importance of understanding how academic stress
affects the mental health of senior high school students at Matanao
National High School. It highlights that mental health plays a crucial role in
students' overall well-being, academic performance, and ability to cope
with stress. The study acknowledges that academic stress—caused by
excessive workload, high parental expectations, and social pressures—
can lead to anxiety, depression, and emotional exhaustion, negatively
impacting students' daily functioning and relationships. Additionally,
systemic factors such as educational policies, assessment methods, and
learning environments further intensify stress levels. Despite the growing
body of research on academic stress and mental health, most studies
focus on urban settings or international contexts, leaving a gap in
understanding how these issues affect students in rural areas like
Matanao, Davao del Sur.
