FLUORINE

• Fluorine is a chemical electronegative element with the

symbol F and atomic number 9.

• It is the lightest halogen and exist at standard condition

as a highly toxic, pale yellow diatomic gas.

• Among the electronegative reactive element , it is most

reactive element, as it react with all other element
except the light inert gas.

FLOURIDE

• Fluoride is the ionic form of the element fluorine which

are naturally present in many foods and available as a
dietary supplements.

• It inhibits or reverse the initiation and progression of

dental caries (tooth decay) and stimulates new bone
formation.

Increase enamel resistance or reduction in enamel solubility.

Increase rate of post eruptive maturation.
Remineralization of incipient caries.
Interferes with plaque microorganism.
Modification in tooth morphology.

Fluoride causes increased resistance :

1) By decreasing solubility :
When the hydroxyapatite crystal are exposed to low
concentration of fluoride, these crystals gets converted into the
Flouroapatite crystals, which are less soluble in oral acids.

2) By improving crystallinity:
According to the void theory, these hydroxyapatite crystals
contain missing hydroxyl ions, so these fluoride ions fill up these
occasional void and stabilize the structure of enamel by providing stronger
hydrogen bonds leading to greater resistance to dissolution in acids .8 8

and bacteria:
Higher fluoride concentration result in desorbing the
proteins and bacteria so the colonies and plaque formation are
minimized.

4) Lowers free surface energy:

When the tooth enamel is treated with the metal fluoride
solution (stannous , amine) the free energy on enamel surface is
lowered .This decrease the wettability of the enamel and thus results in
reduced plaque formation.

MATURATION
1)The greatest importance of fluoride to the maturation process lies in its
ability to increase the rate of mineralization of the hypomineralized area.

2)Newly erupted teeth often have the hypomineralized area that are prone
to dental caries.

3) Fluoride increases the rate of mineralization or post eruptive

maturation combining with the organic material as it is also deposited into
the enamel surface so that the less soluble tooth which are resistance to
acid attack becomes less prone to caries.

CARIES
Fluoride reduces the dental caries by enhancing the remineralization.
Remineralization deposits the mineral into previously damaged area
of tooth leading to reduced solubility.
This reduced solubility or increased resistance is achieved through
growth of crystals which becomes larger than demineralized or sound
enamel which makes the teeth resistant to acid attack.
The most effective remineralizing enamel solution contain fluoride in
combination with calcium and phosphate ion which comes from two
sources i.e saliva and the tooth mineral dissolved during
demineralization.

Fluoride interferes with the oral bacteria in 2 ways:

a) In higher concentration, Fluoride is bactericidal and on two bacterial

enzymes i.e ENOLASE & PHOSPHOGLUCOMUTASE

b) In lower concentration, fluoride is bacteriostatic that controls the

growth of bacteria without destroying them fluoride lodges in the plaque
and inhibits the bacterial enzyme responsible for acid metabolism.

E) MODIFICATION

• Systemic administration of fluoride, results in

Shallow occlusal grooves
Lower cuspal height
Smaller sized teeth
• So, the teeth shows rounded appearance
resulting in lesser chance of plaque formation

CONCLUSION

 Fluoride in recommended concentration is definitely

beneficial to health.
 In excess amount it is harmful to the body
 Appropriate fluoride intake in different population
group in different area has to be ascertain on the
basis of fluoride concentration in food and water
resources taken by the local population
