 Etching and Conditioning
 Washing and Drying
 Bonding
 Curing
 Incremental Buildup and Curing of
Composite
 Finishing and Polishing
 Post-operative Instructions
 I S O L AT I O N
 Composite resins are highly technique sensitive.

 Isolation is achieved with the help of rubber dam or cotton rolls.

 It avoid the contamination of composite from saliva, gingival fluid or
blood.
 C AV I T Y P R E PA RAT I O N
 The Cavity is prepared and margins beveled.

 The Cavity is prepared to the extension of

the caries.
CLEANING
 Cleaning of the cavity is done with cavity cleaners.

 Most commonly used cavity cleaners is

Chlorhexidine gluconate.

 They are bactericidal/bacteriostatic,

biocompatible and easy to acquire and
handle.

 Cleaning of the cavity is done for 60

seconds.
ETCHING AND CONDITIONING

 Remove the smear layer and demineralize the tissues.

 Most common etchant used for enamel etch is 37% Phosphoric acid.
 Etchants are found in two forms :

 Various acid are supplied with various adhesive systems :

 Citric acid
 Maleic acid
 Nitric acid
 Phosphoric acid
 Polyacrylic acid

 Etching time : 15-30 Seconds

60 Seconds (Deciduous Teeth)
 Conditioning is usually done in dentin with 10% Polyacrylic acid.
WASHING AND DRYING
 The acid is rinsed off for 5-10 seconds and the area is dried thoroughly.

 Washing is performed with triple syringe.

BONDING
 An enamel or dentin bond agent is applied and polymerized.
 Bonding agents are unfilled resins that flow into the micro
channels and form an interlocking system.

 Bonding agents are available in Liquid form.

 Bonding agent is applied with the help of small brush.

CURING
 Curing is done after the application of bonding agent.

 It is usually done for 20 seconds.

 Incremental Buildup and Curing of
Composite
 Fill the cavity with composite restoration in increments.

 Cure for 40-45 seconds after each incremental

placement of composite.

 Curing is done with the help of light cure.

FINISHING AND POLISHING

 Refined finishing may be needed especially when occlusion adjustment

are necessary.

 The occlusal surface is shaped with a round or oval carbide finishing

bur or similarly shaped finishing diamond.
CONTD..
 The marginal ridge is contoured with the help of tungsten carbide
finishing bur.

 Polishing is accomplished with appropriate polishing cups, points, or

both after the occlusion is adjusted as necessary.
